Quality Controller
Location: Sunbury
Working hours: Full-time, Monday – Friday (9am – 5pm)
Howard Tenens are currently looking to recruit a Quality Controller to provide Food-safety and certification advice and support to the site, as well as food-safety and quality management for food-based contracts. The Quality controller (QC) will be responsible for ensuring the upkeep of all documentation relating to the safety, quality, integrity and legality of products stored and distributed by the site. The QC will be the first point of contact for both HT and WFM teams for all questions and requests relating to food-based products and processes. Their role will be pivotal to maintain standards and setting an example for food-safety culture.
The role will require the individual to deliver training on food-safety awareness, both in a formal setting as well as on-the-job, and to advise staff of best practice approaches. The QC will also be required to prepare and present BRCGS Monthly Quality Management Meetings, send out corresponding minutes and actions following meetings, as well as attend various site-lead and customer meetings where food-safety and quality management updates are required. The QC will also be required to liaise with customers and site management to ensure requirements are being met from both sides of the operation, as well as keeping up to date with legality and legislative requirements.
Duties and responsibilities:
* Attend regular meetings both face-to-face and virtually, to provide WFM updates on processes, product/quality trends, site incidents and success stories
* Inspect all inbound product at receiving for quality issues. Help to ensure that the product is ordered is the product delivered.
* Perform comprehensive inspections and reports as required.
* Assisting with all food-based contracts on site – Ensuring we are aware of any existing and new allergens in the products and segregation requirements are appropriate.
* Overseeing environmental checks in all storage spaces and trailers at required intervals throughout the day, including performing temperature checks on all incoming loads upon arrival to site
* Checking any integrity escalations of products and initiating investigation procedure if required
* Work with Whole Foods to resolve problem arrivals including reporting quality issues and monitoring protection tracking and reporting losses.
* Work with leadership at store level to maintain quality standards and remove poor quality product from the distribution chain.
* Obtaining all physical evidence to support investigation requirements, such as photographic and/or video evidence as necessary
* Acting as the point of contact during investigation procedures
* Maintaining and updating of all site certification documents according to review / when changes occur
* Ensuring documentation required from site teams is completed in a timely manner (i.e. Glass and Brittle Plastics Registers, Monthly Management Walkarounds, non-conformance reporting etc.)
* Facilitating the organising of external training sessions (HACCP, Internal Auditors) when required, alongside the Quality Manager
* Preparation and execution of site annual certification/contractual Audits
* Creating, presenting, minuting and distribution of Monthly Quality Management Meetings, Quality reports for trending food items and ‘Weekly Shrink top 20’ as requested by WFM
* Liaising with contracted suppliers as appropriate to arrange routine and/or adhoc visits as required
* Liaising with Hygiene team to lay out expectations and create cleaning schedules
* Dealing with any major food product spillages / breakages and training out how to appropriately deal with these situations.
* Completing daily walks and reporting of refrigeration and freezer units, as well as weekly site walkarounds
* Management and continued overseeing of organic stock segregation and storage within facilities
* Training staff on BRCGS/food-safety awareness
* Creating and distributing of food-safety materials (Tip of The Week posters etc.)
* Email communications to Internal Auditors stating when audits are due and typing them up once complete
* Managing and ordering of food-safety required equipment, such as shadow boards and signage
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
* Confident and concise communication skills (both written and verbal)
* Good working knowledge of BRCGS Guidelines
* Good working knowledge of Soil Association/Organic certification guidelines
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications and other office systems
* Ability to prioritise workload and work independently
* Confident in delivering training / briefings.
* General knowledge of warehouse operations
* An eye for quality and a commitment to achieving excellence.
* A passion for produce.
* Ability to visually examine products for quality and freshness and to check signage and labelling for accurate pricing.
Credentials, qualifications and experience:
* Passes in English and Mathematics (GCSE level or equivalent)
* Excellent Organisational skills
* Excellent time management skills
* Ability to train and support staff
* Experience working in a food-based industry (ideally within the logistics sector)
* HACCP Level 2 certification
* Certification in Organic Awareness
