Consultant Geriatrician/Medicine of the Older Person

We are a forward thinking team that prides itself on providing high quality clinical care. We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we are increasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years. There will also be a marked increase in junior medical staff to support. We are looking for dynamic and motivated Geriatrician Consultants to join our friendly and dynamic team, to develop and embed high quality care for the frail and older patient in a number of different clinical settings.
As we expand key services and frailty pathways to benefit patients, we are developing and enhancing our service across our sub-specialties, including; Acute Frailty (SDEC), Acute Frailty Units, Frailty Specialist Units, Movement Disorder Services, Ortho-Geri's, Surgical Liaison, Hospital at Home and Outpatient activity.
Main duties of the job
The basic whole-time contract is for 10 programmed activities; 8.5 DCC (7 clinical sessions with 1.5 PAs admin time and for educational supervision) + additional 1.5 SPA. Consideration for part time working could be accommodated.
There will be a discussion with candidates regarding the final job plan/oncall arrangements, prior to the interview and appointment to ensure the job plan reflects both the individuals and organisation goals. On calls can be solely in geriatric medicine or potentially GIM depending on preference.
Additional programmed PAs may be available for additional activities and specialist interests if desired. Additional SPA time may be available depending on individual and service requirements.
Job Responsibilities
* The post-holder will be expected to undertake clinical work in conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop elderly care and acute frailty services.
* The post-holder will be based at the University Hospital North Durham, Darlington Memorial Hospital or Bishop Auckland Hospital.
* Responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior medical staff.
* Expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
* Actively participate in clinical audit.
* Participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines.
* On call commitments; the post includes a GIM oncall commitment.
Person Specification
Special Skills & Knowledge Essential
* Previous management experience or formal management and leadership training
* Previous active involvement in audit and QiP work
* Evidence of active teaching of undergraduates, junior doctors, nurses or allied health professionals
* Good clinical skills
Experience Essential
* Good clinical skills including the management of acutely unwell medical patients.
* Experience in working within a multi-disciplinary team with good communication skills.
Statutory Registration Essential
* Full registration with the GMC
Qualifications Essential
* MBchB or equivalent
* MRCP
* CCT in geriatric medicine, or within 6 months of expected CCT at time of appointment.
