Principal Research Scientist (Permanent, Full Time)
Marine Physics and Ocean Climate (MPOC), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton
We are seeking a principal research scientist to join the RAPID team on an open-ended appointment in the MPOC group at the NOC in Southampton.
About the role:
The successful candidate will undertake and lead research on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its role in the global climate system, and will contribute to delivering the RAPID programme’s goals of observing and quantifying the AMOC.
In addition, the successful candidate will lead a five-yearly repeat of the GO-SHIP section across the Atlantic at 26°N, co-located with RAPID. The candidate will also lead and contribute to research proposals that build on and add value to the RAPID and repeat hydrography observations. The post holder will lead both on the evaluation of the existing array measurements and technology, and also particularly on the evolution of observing the AMOC with alternate data sources and developing technologies. We expect the post holder to grow into the future leader of the RAPID team here at NOC.
This is an Open Ended appointment, offered on NERC terms and conditions and open to internal and external candidates. We welcome applications for full- and part-time working.
This is a Principal Research Scientist (Band 4) position and the salary band will be £45,271 to £51,667 per annum.
Hours of Work:
The hours of working are 37 hours per week for a full-time post and reduced pro-rata for a part-time post.

The successful applicant will be an innovative and original thinker on the ocean’s role in the climate system, and will be a highly-motivated and productive scientific leader, with strong records of leading and collaborating on research programmes, publications and competitive income generation, who will join a network of international researchers involved as project partners, investigators, postdoctoral researchers and students. The ability to work as part of such a team is essential.
