We provide a comprehensive Respiratory service for both Inpatient & Outpatients across the range of sub-specialities and work closely with our primary care colleagues. As a cohesive and collaborative group of consultants, we offer a broad range of expertise and there is every opportunity for the new post holder to continue to develop an existing area of interest or develop expertise in a new sub-speciality.
Our services are supported by an excellent multidisciplinary team of Respiratory and Lung Cancer Nurse specialists along with outpatient physiotherapy and pulmonary physiology. We work closely with an enthusiastic secretarial team who provide administrative support. Our junior doctor team includes Specialist Registrars, Respiratory Clinical Fellows and Internal Medicine and Foundation trainees.

Our new colleague will join the existing respiratory consultants in delivering a high quality and patient centred inpatient & outpatient specialist care to our local population of around 270,000 people. Inpatient responsibilities are on a rotational basis with other respiratory colleagues, some weeks focusing on the respiratory ward & speciality inpatient referrals & other weeks with more outpatient & procedure activity.
We have a well-established fibreoptic bronchoscopy, EBUS and thoracoscopy service with opportunity to develop this further. We provide an ambulatory pleural service including indwelling intra pleural catheter insertion. These services also offer an excellent opportunity to engage in practical training & education for our speciality trainees.
Our robust Lung Cancer service has a weekly multidisciplinary team meeting attended by Medical and Clinical Oncology & Palliative Care teams & virtually by the Thoracic Surgeons. Systemic anti-cancer therapy is delivered on site with timely radiotherapy & surgery provided by colleagues in Southampton.
We have a small domiciliary non-complex non-invasive ventilation service as well as an extensive Sleep service which serves the local population as well as Dorset. There is opportunity to expand an interest in domiciliary NIV by developing links with our onsite regional Spinal Unit. We have close links with the Southampton Difficult Asthma & Interstitial Lung Disease teams & other tertiary centres in London & further afield.

We wish to appoint to a substantive consultant post however those wishing for a fixed term positions will also be considered. Applications from those wishing to work whole-time or on a less than whole-time basis are welcome with flexible working options available for discussion balanced against the needs of the service.
As a whole time post this attracts 10 PAs. Initially this will include 1.5 PA of personal SPA time. Further increments in SPA time are available should the post holder take on additional responsibilities such as roles in management or education. There is an additional 1.0 PA for the GIM on call commitment, ~ 1: 15 weekdays & weekends (subject to review).
Candidates for the post will need to hold a CCT or be within six months of obtaining CCT or hold a CESR. Those interested in the posts however who are close to obtaining a CESR or CCT but not currently eligible are welcome to contact the department for an informal conversation.
