Postdoctoral Associate in Disease Modelling: The Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position. This is a three-year, fixed-term role funded by a research grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The successful candidate will work with Professor Robin Thompson on developing data-driven mathematical models for avian influenza outbreaks in Great Britain. This role offers an opportunity to make a significant real-world impact and collaborate with a diverse team.
Designation: Postdoctoral Research Associate
Research Area: Infectious Disease Modelling
Location: Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, Andrew Wiles Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6GG
Minimum Requirements:
* Ph.D. in a relevant field
* Strong modelling and computational skills
* Ability to conduct research independently and collaboratively
* Interest in making real-world impact through research
Job Description:
The postdoctoral researcher will be a part of Professor Thompson’s research group within the Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology. Their main responsibility is to develop data-driven mathematical models and associated computational code for avian influenza outbreaks in Great Britain. These models will be used to test various intervention strategies. Collaboration with project team members at the University of Warwick and the UK government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency is a key aspect of this role. The research is funded by the BBSRC grant “Modelling to inform interventions during Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreaks in Great Britain” (BB/X016137/1).
The successful candidate will conduct research both independently and collaboratively with group members in Oxford and other institutions. Additionally, they will provide informal mentorship to doctoral students in the group, making this role ideal for individuals with strong modelling and computational skills looking to have a significant positive impact on the real world.
The department has a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, reflecting its commitment to advancing racial and gender equality. To promote staff equality and diversity, applications from women and BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) candidates are strongly encouraged, as they are currently under-represented in positions of this nature within the department.
