NHS HIGHLAND
BELFORD HOSPITAL, FORT WILLIAM
Rural Emergency Practitioner £106,936 to £128,368 pro rata per annum
Due to a need to provide robust general support to our emergency department we are looking to recruit an 0.5 WTE Rural Emergency Practitioner to join our team.
As a member of the team of senior generalists, you will provide a focal point for acute medical services in Belford Hospital. Your work will be an exciting amalgamation of all your previous experience but in a magnificent rural setting. You will be involved in running the service providing support to the Accident and Emergency department which deals with >10,000 encounters per year from the Lochaber area.
This is an exciting prospect, providing broad clinical exposure to the full range of emergency care and supporting medical and surgical inpatient care in a modern environment with full support facilities and a superb continuing professional development package.
This is a different way to use the expertise you have from general practice or emergency medicine, to provide a quality emergency medical service in a remote and rural location.
You will have a key leadership role, when on shift, in providing senior advice and interventions across the hospital.
Applicants should either hold the Certificate of Completion of Training for General Practitioners and be registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice, or a CCT in Emergency medicine.
Fort William is the outdoor capital of the UK and offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor leisure pursuits, stunning scenery and wildlife and good schools in a friendly and supportive community all within a two hour drive of Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The current hospital has a 17 bedded Combined Assessment Unit for acute admissions, a two bedded high dependency unit with facility for short-term critical care and a 15 bedded acute mixed/rehabilitation ward. The Belford has an excellent on-site laboratory service providing biochemistry, haematology and cross match services 24/7 in addition to on site radiology with ultrasound scanning and CT facility.
You will be based at the Belford Hospital, joining our established team of senior nurses, medical, surgical and anaesthetic consultant colleagues who have a unified role providing for the needs of the population. In addition you will be involved in supporting FY2, ST1 and GPST doctors in training.
Belford Hospital, Fort William is unique. It is a Rural General Hospital located in the Scottish Highlands (but close enough to be able to drive to the central belt in 2 hours). So you have the beauty of the Scottish Highlands combined with the convenience of being within striking distance of the major Scottish centres (and London is only a sleeper-train journey away). The three acute specialties of Surgery, Medicine and Anaesthesia have 24/7 consultant cover.
Prior experience in A&E, trauma, paediatrics and basic anaesthetic skills would be welcomed but ongoing additional training is also available. There are also exciting opportunities to be involved in research with the University of the Highlands and Islands and Aberdeen University.
Informal enquiries would be welcomed by:
Emma Oates, Clinical Hospital Manager 01397 702481 or Dr Steve Gilbert, Lead Clinician
Job reference: 198603
Closing date: Midnight Wednesday 6th November 2024

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
