Job Purpose: To provide specialist physiotherapeutic assessment, treatment and management of children 0-19 presenting with a wide range of neurological, respiratory and orthopaedic conditions in a variety of community settings. You will also be expected to train, supervise and clinically support junior staff, assistants and students, as well as working with the wider multidisciplinary team, the local authority and wider community organisations to support children and families. To train, supervise and clinically support junior staff, assistants and students. Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Care 1. As an autonomous practitioner, to provide specialist assessment and treatment of children using a variety of modalities for those whose presentation could include complex physical, respiratory or developmental difficulties and have other diverse health needs. Therapy is provided in a variety of settings. 2. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date clinical records in accordance with professional standards and local policy. To communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines verbally and in the form of letters and reports. 3. To work sensitively with parents and carers to ensure excellent communication on all aspects of the childs care. To communicate effectively with children and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of conditions to give sensitive/emotive information around diagnosis and or outcomes. 4. To be able to provide, receive and use complex information, including that which is highly sensitive. To use developed interpersonal and communication skills to gain co-operation where barriers to communication may exist. The knowledge and use of alternative methods of communication may be required. 5. To negotiate appropriate goals with children and their parents/carers. 6. To assess capacity to give consent and gain valid informed consent working within the legal framework. 7. To liaise with consultants, other health disciplines or education and social services practitioners involved in the management and education of the children, to ensure understanding of the needs of the child and to plan effective care, ensuring transference of skills where appropriate. It may also involve challenging or negotiating changes to programmes set by other professionals. 8. To prepare reported for Education, Health and Care Plans within the appropriate timescale, and contribute written and verbal reports for IEPs, annual reviews and transition, contributing appropriately to development of young peoples Health Action Plans. 9. To contribute to multi-disciplinary and multi-agency care co-ordination as named professional in a team around the child model. Where appropriate to contribute to or lead a CAF/Early Help. 10. To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment seeking advice as appropriate. To support families in receiving diagnosis and Sharing the News Framework. 11. To assess for and arrange procurement of medical devices (e.g. orthotics, standing frames, mobility aids, respiratory aids etc.), documenting the clinical decision-making process and ensuring appropriate records of issues equipment are kept. 12. To work within the Local Area Safeguarding Boards guidance for safeguarding both children and adults. To attend and contribute to child protection conferences as appropriate. 13. To undertake the comprehensive physiotherapy assessment of paediatric patients including those with a complex presentation using investigative and analytical skills to formulate individualised management and treatment plans using clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised physiotherapy programme. 14. To evaluate continually the effectiveness of interventions and modify the treatment plan as necessary. 15. To discharge appropriately, agreeing a point of closure with the clients and carers and informing other professionals. To produce informative and detailed information for out of Trust patient transfers for continuing physiotherapy management. 16. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of paediatric patients and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time. To assess and manage clinical risk in your own caseload. 17. To use the relevant therapeutic skills and postural management advise in the treatment and handling of children/young people. 18. To provide planned and spontaneous advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to care. 19. To deliver a service in line with current national policy and guidance. 20. To deliver service across Bridgewater Trust as required. General Duties 21. To contribute to service developments. 22. To participate in audit and research. 23. To take part in PDR and agree a personal development plan. 24. To access clinical supervision for self on a quarterly basis. 25. To contribute to clinical governance and provide information as required. 26. To provide quality monitoring and activity data as required. 27. To complete, record and used CPD to enhance clinical and professional development. 28. To attend professional meetings within the organisation and externally e.g. clinical interest groups. 29. To undertake clinical training appropriate to the role. 30. To undertake and contribute to In Service Training for the Paediatric Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Service. 31. To delegate tasks appropriately to junior and therapy support staff. 32. To train and supervise junior and support staff.
