Job summary – What to expect: As the Senior Development Engineer – Optics and Metrology, you will be working with the Lens Design & Metrology team to develop new and existing contact lens products. The role will involve designing contact lenses, as well as the tooling and plastic components required to produce them. This role will also have responsibility for development and testing of metrology techniques used in the measurement of these products as well as the statistical analysis of metrology results. The role will cover all stages of the contact lens manufacturing process including testing both in-vivo and in-vitro. Participate and lead in the design, development and verification of new products, making use of appropriate design software (either bespoke or third party) and data analysis tools/models where required. Identify new methods of product metrology, and improve existing methods and techniques, to guide product development and process control. To assess and implement new product metrology/test methods. Compliance to relevant BS EN ISO 18963 standards. Identify improvement areas and/or suitable new technology, and initiate, manage and deliver subsequent solutions. Understand and develop new and existing lens design and metrology systems procedures. Support the development of products and processes in manufacturing throughout their lifecycle through the production of new tooling designs. Support development/improvement of tooling manufacture methods and associated metrology. Generate training materials and train manufacturing and R&D technical staff in the use of equipment as the business requires. Work with clinical teams to develop novel product ideas. Design and manage trials, perform statistical data analysis, and present results to applicable stakeholders. Write technical verification and validation protocols and reports. To keep clear and organised records of design work. A ct as mentor and coach/train other staff where appropriate. Liaise with and identify new customers, vendors and outside technical resources. Involved in Quality ensuring SOP’s are understood and followed and Good Manufacturing Procedures are maintained. A full job description is available upon request. About you: We are looking for someone who has the following experience: Essential Understands fundamental principles of optics with some exposure to optics studio. Excellent analytical skills / use of statistical methods and software tools. Ability to perform data analysis in Matlab or python or experience with CAD packages (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks). Experienced and capable programmer using one of the following programming languages: Matlab or Python. Effective communicator with the ability to communicate across all levels. Strong problem solving skills with a structured approach (e.g. Six Sigma/DMAIC). Strong ability to multi-task and work across or be involved in multiple projects simultaneously. Strong IT skills, including significant experience with Microsoft Office packages. Excellent presentation and report writing skills. Desirable Robust understanding of optics, metrology, experimental design and evaluation. Experience with Optics Studio or similar optical simulation software. Knowledge of medical device industry and relevant BS EN ISO13485 standards. Previous experience with lasers.
