The Service Entry Medical Cell is a department sitting within the Recruitment and Attraction as part of the People and Training Directorate, based from HM Naval Base Portsmouth.
The key role of the Civilian Consultant is to advise the Head of Recruitment and Attraction on all medical matters, including the fitness for Service entry of civilian candidates and re-entry or inter-Service transfer for previously or currently serving personnel, within the bounds of confidentiality as detailed in General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines.
This position delivers effective, efficient, and accountable Service Entry medical assessments to pre-entry candidates and those on service transfer and re-entry, ensuring individuals are physically and mentally ready for Phase 1 training.
Workload includes policy development and casework to determine fitness for military service and work alongside contracted medical examiners. The post is full-time with hybrid working options. There are no on-call commitments or weekend requirements. This position is advertised at 40 hours per week but is open to job share.
Responsibilities include:
* Working with Recruitment and Attraction’s Medical Division to ensure appropriate Royal Navy input to policy.
* Assessing candidates’ fitness for entry to Service or specific military employment.
* Advising the Contractor on medical standards and policy.
* Supporting Military Medical Examiners in the assessment of candidates’ fitness for military service.
* Liaising with the Practice Medical Officers of New Entry Training Establishments.
* Advising the Head of Recruitment and Attraction and the contractor of any follow-up regarding concerns with Military Medical Examiners.
* Maintaining appraisal and re-validation in accordance with GMC and Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
Person specification
We are looking for someone who has:
* Appropriate clinical skills and experience to provide medical oversight.
* Registered medical practitioner on the GMC Specialist Register in Occupational Medicine, holding a license to practice and in date for annual appraisal and revalidation.
* Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to form strong working relationships with the existing Service Entry Medical Department, military and non-military partners.
* A proven track record of working collaboratively within teams.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* A commitment to undertake continuing professional development throughout their career.
This role will require full UK security clearance. For some roles, Developed Vetting will also be required; in this case, you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.
Licences
Registered Medical Practitioner on the GMC Specialist Register in Occupational Medicine. Holding license to practice.
Qualifications
Proof of GMC validation and re-validation certificate will need to be presented at interview. Certificate of Completion of Training. Evidence of qualification will be required at interview. All qualifications/licenses declared must be valid at the point of application and are in date. Equivalent Qualifications will not be accepted.
