Are you an experienced health and safety professional looking for a unique opportunity to shape safety management at a national level? We are currently recruiting for a Head of Safety - Governance & Assurance to join a high-profile organisation, overseeing safety compliance and governance in an environment rich in history and responsibility.
The Role
As the Head of Safety - Governance & Assurance, you will lead a team responsible for developing and implementing the organisation's Safety Management System (SMS). You will work closely with senior leadership to ensure statutory compliance, support the development of a comprehensive safety strategy, and manage systems that drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
This role involves managing the accident and incident reporting process, overseeing safety investigations, and ensuring safety governance frameworks are in place. You'll collaborate with various teams to embed a positive safety culture across the organisation and play a pivotal role in safety audits, policy development, and assurance reviews.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop and implement the organisation's Safety Management System (SMS) and associated policies.
2. Lead safety governance and assurance initiatives, including annual audits and incident investigations.
3. Monitor and report on safety performance to senior leadership, providing assurance of compliance.
4. Manage the accident and incident reporting system, ensuring serious incidents are investigated thoroughly.
5. Collaborate with the Learning & Training team to develop safety training programs and materials.
6. Prepare for and coordinate ISO 45001 certification, working with relevant teams on readiness and compliance.
7. Lead and manage the Safety Governance & Assurance team, supporting the development of team members.
Person Specification
1. Level 6 qualification in Health & Safety (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ, or Bachelor's Degree).
2. Membership of a relevant technical body (IOSH, IIRSM, or equivalent).
3. Proven experience in strategic health and safety management at a senior level.
4. Strong knowledge of current safety legislation and best practice.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
6. Experience in leading teams and building strong collaborative partnerships.
