Job Title
Principal Mechanical Engineer
The Opportunity
Do you want to be a part of the team developing the next generation of world-leading Counter UAS (Un-crewed Air Systems) and Acoustic Location Products?
At Leonardo, we have an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Mission Systems Team, where you will work alongside some of the UK's most talented Engineers and Scientists. The role will require novel approaches to overcome the demanding challenges set by our customers and will build on decades of domain-leading heritage.
All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within structural, thermal, and model-driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.
This role allows a mixture of on-site and remote working; with attendance at our Basildon facility required when customer requirements dictate.
Applicants must be eligible to meet full UK Security Clearance and ITAR.
What You’ll Do As a Principal Mechanical Engineer
You will be responsible for:
* Compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc.
* Inception, research, and development of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of products.
* Mechanical Engineering detailed design; including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
* Producing Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
* Support to successful resolution of technical investigations.
* Contributing to reviews of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
* Hands-on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
* Providing support during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
* Actively manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule, and Cost.
* Mentoring junior members of the Mechanical Team with respect to Engineering competencies and best practices.
What We Need From You
Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
* A minimum of an upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or equivalent experience in the field of Defence and/or a highly regulated industry. Mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or EO products.
* Design of systems for ‘harsh environments’ i.e. Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
* Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
* Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
* Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
* Experienced in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration, and Sustainability.
Desirable Qualifications/Experience
* MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
* Working knowledge of opto-mechanical design solutions.
* Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose i.e. using PTC Simulate, flow, or similar.
* Understanding of CONOPS to aid Requirements Management and technical solutions.
* Solutions involving sheet metal and tube (bend and weld) fabrication.
* Understanding of Model Based Design (i.e. MATLAB, Simulink, etc).
* Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques, and technologies.
