ProtonDx is a dynamic and innovative Imperial College London spin-out, specialising in medical diagnostics and related technologies. Our multi-disciplinary engineering team spans across the fields of electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, molecular biology, and more. With the recent launch of our regulatory-approved point-of-care diagnostic product, Dragonfly, and a nucleic acid extraction kit for research use, SmartLid, we are poised for rapid growth and expansion into new product lines and strategic partnerships. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of science and technology to improve healthcare outcomes.
We are seeking a talented mechatronics engineer, with a strong foundational and practical background in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, to help us develop our next innovative product: Lacewing, an automated sample-to-result diagnostic platform based on state-of-the-art CMOS-based Lab-on-a-Chip technology and magnetically actuated nucleic acid extraction.
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a strong track record of practical experience – this post is not for theorists. Links to portfolios with examples of past work are encouraged, but not required. (Offline portfolios and work examples can also be uploaded through the application form.)
Key Responsibilities:
* Support the design and development of a state-of-the-art automated molecular diagnostic device.
* Evaluate, prototype, and iterate electromechanical nucleic acid extraction and lab-on-a-chip detection systems.
* Design and fabricate robust alpha prototypes for field-evaluation.
* Present to internal teams as well as external stakeholders; regularly building presentations and reports to drive brainstorming, communicate designs, and share status updates.
* Diligently generate and maintain design documentation for first generation devices; recording design requirements, hardware descriptions, V&V test documentation, schematic and layout documentation, etc.
* Analyse and optimize developed systems through simulation techniques such as FEA.
* Support and evaluate key external manufacturing and contracting partner relationships to ensure high-fidelity communication of design requirements, intent, and deliverable quality.
Minimum Requirements:
* Bachelors/Masters/PhD or equivalent accredited degree in a relevant field (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, etc.).
* 4-8 years of relevant industry experience, ideally in a mechatronics or electromechanical engineering role.
* Strong track-record of developing actuated and automated electromechanical systems from the ground up.
* Hands-on experience with all facets of mechatronics, including mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software subsystems.
* Knowledge and practical experience in a broad range of rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing, laser cutting, thermoforming, CNC machining, injection moulding, PCB design and fabrication, etc.
* Strong CAD design skills, ideally in Onshape or SOLIDWORKS.
* Functional experience in C/C++, Python, and/or Java for embedded applications and application development across platforms.
* Understanding of embedded microcontroller hardware and real-time operating systems.
* Design-for-manufacturing experience.
* Aptitude for creative and “out-of-the-box” thinking.
* Agile mind-set, happy working within a fast-paced R&D environment with evolving priorities.
* Ability to work effectively either as part of an interdisciplinary team or independently to deliver against agreed timescales and outputs.
* Experience working to strict quality standards (ISO13485) is desired, but not required.
