This role is part of a Hays Exclusive campaign with one of our key clients, a Children's Residential Service based in South West London.
Your new company
This is a 5-bed home, supporting 11-17 year olds with EBD, and have recently been able to maintain capacity for 5 young people. The home is also mixed gendered, and has typically had a mix of 2-3 females or 2-3 males at any given time. Most of the young people have free time for themselves out in the community, and rarely require 1:1 support. However, most of the young people require support to access education, and all of the young people require staff support whilst out in the community to spend and manage their allowances. The needs tend to be more of the 'traditional' needs within residential care, and the therapeutic approaches to managing and understanding these risks is key. Young people can and will display challenging behaviour, both within the home and out in the community.
Some of the typical needs they support are:
At risk of criminal exploitation (county lines, theft)
Managing safe and positive relationships
Accessing and engaging in Education
Managing emotions leading to threats of or actual physical aggression
Substance misuse; typically cannabis and alcohol
Missing episodes/ absconding
Understanding/ safeguarding their own sexual health
Managing their free time effectively/ safely
CSE risk both in the community and online
Your new role
The key skills you will need for this role are:
Be very aware of the outside influences/ risks to young people in the inner-city environment.
Can build a great rapport with young people who need to be exposed to positive activities to engage with in the community.
Resilient to challenging behaviour
Maturity within the role, both professionally and personally
Can set clear expectations for behaviour in a professional way.
Can work within a team to be vigilant around the home and in the immediate locality of the home.
Can bring elements of fun to the role and will be willing to engage in activities with the young people.
Understanding of the missing protocol and works with us to go above and beyond on our efforts to safeguard when young people are missing.
What you'll need to succeed
3 years of experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour within a residential care setting
You will need to be physically and mentally strong to cope with the challenges of this role.
Available to work full time (average 39 hours per week), and be able to cover some weekends and bank holidays
Ideally have NVQ L3 in Residential Childcare (or equivalent), or be willing to work towards it.
