Job Requirements
TheMechanicalHandling Group within the Engineering Services Facilities EngineeringTechnicalAuthority are responsible for providingtechnical supportand design consultancy on non-nuclear and nuclearmechanicalhandling assets within the site; for example, cranes, hauling equipment andlifting equipment.
A newMechanicalHandling Engineer, is required to coordinate, deliver and manage work within theMechanicalHandling Group in providing their Design andTechnicalAuthority responsibilities to the business.
The post is a non-industrial permanent full time position.
The role is predominantly desk based (a mix of office and home working) but will entail access to industrial areas (including radiologically controlled areas) across the Dockyard.
Work Experience
The primary purpose of the role is to provide professional and flexibletechnicalaccountability to the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extantmechanicalhandling assets.
You will be responsible for the management and delivery oftechnical supportand advice on maintaining the design intent of existingmechanicalhandling systems and equipment, including:
Attendance at Authorisation Group meetings;
Periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities;
Specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications;
Maintaining configuration oftechnicaldrawings and documentation;
Reviewing concession applications;
Responding to formalTechnical Queries;
Undertaking asset conditionsurveys;
Undertaking obsolescence studies;
Preparing asset health reports for critical assets;
Supporting fault diagnosis and rectification;
Identifying defects through Defect Condition Reports;
Reviewing industry codes, standards and legislation.
Generating and writing scopes of works and statements of requirements for projects.
Answering and deliveringtechnicalprojects and packages of works.
This type of work entails the application of the Design & Safety Processes across the design lifecycle (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detail, Implementation and Operations), undertaking a variety of defined activities and deliverables, and following the appropriate levels oftechnicalgovernance.
The deliverables and support required includes:
Capturing requirements;
Design development (drawings, calculations and documents);
Specification writing;
Producing commissioning documentation;
Managingtechnical queriesand design deviations;
Providing support to implementation phase (technicaladvice during manufacturing, installation and commissioning witnessing Factoryacceptance testingetc.)
Additionally, but not mandatory, is the ability to manage and allocate appropriate personnel to the Design Consultancy function of the department where the activities are generally focused on the provision of new, or modification to, crane designs,lifting equipmentand systems as well as injection of new capabilities and undertaking life extension activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
Required:
MechanicalorElectrical Engineeringdegree;
Knowledge of the design process and evidence of the design and substantiation of systems and components;
Extensive knowledge of the general regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to the design life cycle ofmechanicalhandling equipment;
Proficiency in understanding/production of hand calculations/FEA;
Proficiency in understanding/production of electrical/mechanical engineeringdrawings;
Knowledge and awareness of cranes, crane safety and associatedmechanicalhandling systems;
Understanding of nuclear industry and/or other safety critical environments.

Qualifications:
A minimum of an engineering degree inMechanicalorElectrical Engineering.
Professionalregistrationis desirable.
