Job summary Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a dynamic team of consultants. The Trust Board is committed to the urgent care pathway and is invested in developing the front door pathways including Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Frailty and SDEC options. You will be part of a friendly and dedicated team of 19 Consultants & Specialist Doctors who deliver care for 95,000 new patients who attend our ED each year. The ED is also staffed by 27 SHOs, 6 ANPs/ACPs, 1 Nurse Consultant and 15 ST3 equivalents providing full shift cover. It enjoys an excellent ECP and GP delivered Urgent Care service plus a dedicated Children's Area and waiting room. Main duties of the job The Trust's aim is to provide excellent consultant based care for our patients from the moment they arrive, and to ensure rapid access to the right service at the right time, as well as maximising opportunities for ambulatory care and early discharge. The Emergency Department (including Urgent Care) at the Royal United Hospital has an annual attendance of around 95,000 attendances. 17% of attendances are under the age of 16. We have primary PCI facilities during the weekdays and perform all stroke thrombolysis within the department. We have excellent support from the acute stroke team as well as many other speciality nurses who support patient care in the ED. There is a significant trauma workload and the department is a designated Trauma Unit; consequently there is an active Trauma Team. The department receives nearly 40% of its workload as ambulance borne. We also receive patients from the Avon, Wiltshire and Somerset helicopters. The department has a philosophy of comprehensive patient care where the initial management of the patient is undertaken in the ED and the patient then discharged or handed over to in-patient teams. There is an excellent relationship with the in-patient teams with seamless referrals. The case mix has the highest acuity in the South West (HES data) with a preponderance towards medically unwell patients.
