Shelf Seas Modelling Scientist
Fixed Term, Full Time (37 hours per week)
Marine Systems Modelling Group, National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Liverpool, UK
About the role:
We seek a talented and enthusiastic shelf seas modelling scientist to join the vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Liverpool, UK. The successful candidate will work at the interface between models and observations to improve our ability to understand and predict fine scale physical processes in shelf sea environment. She/he will work on developing and applying the data-assimilation modelling system, based on NEMO and NEMOVAR, currently used in the NW European Continental shelf seas, particularly exploiting data arising from autonomous marine observing platforms, such as marine gliders. The specific scientific focus will be predicting the physical processes that control plankton growth in shelf seas, including seasonal onset and breakdown of stratification, mixing at the pycnocline and cross-frontal transport. She/he will also work on developing the model validation approaches and systems, using the full spectrum of in-situ and remotely sensed observations. The expectation is that a wide range of scientific understanding will inform the development process and be derived from the assessments. The work will be directed towards trial operational observation/forecast periods and the production and assessment of multi-year assimilative products. She/he will work closely with the UK Met Office and collaborate widely across the UK and internationally. Timely publication in high impact scientific journals is a key outcome of this work. The post is funded by the NERC/Defra/WWF Joint Strategic Response programme in Marine Integrated Autonomous Observing Systems and by the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service’s Northwest European Shelf Monitoring and Forecast Centre.
This is a Fixed Term Appointment, initially available for three years offered on NERC terms and conditions.
The starting salary band for this position will be between £28,200 and £30,600 per annum (Band 6). Depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.
About you:
The successful candidate will have experience of ocean hydrodynamics, ideally in shelf sea environments and of ocean modelling approaches, application and development. Experience with and/or an understanding of data assimilation methods is highly desirable. She/he will be a skilled scientific programmer, ideally with FORTRAN, and familiar with team working in a code development context. She/he will have a Strong 1st degree in a numerate science, engineering or mathematics discipline and have achieved a PhD or have equivalent research experience in physical oceanography or other numerate environmental science. She/he will have excellent communication, oral, written and presentational skills, including experience in scientific writing.
What we can offer you:
Here at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), we know that the quality of our science, and the impact that we want it to have, depends entirely on the knowledge, skills and engagement of our people. In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme and 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off. Opportunities for further training, development and participation in international scientific activities are actively encouraged.
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading research centre for ocean modelling, sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development.
Our Commitment as an Employer:
The NOC is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
