A new and exciting substantive vacancy has arisen within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust for a full time Band 7 Paediatric Epilepsy Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The successful candidate will be required to work in collaboration with the Epilepsy Consultants, acute paediatric admission areas, emergency departments and Community Services to support and co-ordinate the management of patients with epilepsy. This is a new role to UHB and an exciting opportunity for an experienced children's or learning disability nurse to develop service pathways, standard operating procedures and educational resources.
We work closely with other specialists in and out of the hospital setting such as paediatricians, community nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, other Clinical Nurse Specialists and GPs to ensure we are always providing the best possible care.
We are looking for a highly motivated children's or learning disability nurse who has experience with children and young people, training and educating parents/ carers and has a good understanding and experience of working with children with epilepsy.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent skills in communication, organisation and time management and will be expected to participate in and deliver regular clinical supervision, Appraisal and NMC Revalidation.
Main duties of the job
Our UHB paediatric clinical nurse specialist services provide friendly, timely and high-quality care to children and young people. This is now extending to provide a specialist Epilepsy Nurse service. An empathetic and problem-solving approach is essential when assessing and planning epilepsy support and care. An ability to multi-task, effectively manage your own time and to co-ordinate the delivery of different care processes is essential.
The role is full time and will deliver care and support to children and young people predominantly across Heartlands and Good Hope hospital sites and will involve education and support to families, carers and the MDT. You will see patients within outpatient and ward areas and within their own homes/ communities as required. You will need to provide a good standard of education and compile comprehensive care plans; an ability to supervise others, teach and assess competency are essential.
The nurse will work closely with the named Consultants and attend regular MDT meetings for both Paediatric and Adult services. Transition is a key period of change for our young people, and this will be planned and co-ordinated by the nurse. Good communication and the ability to work well across different teams is essential.
Our specialist nurse will be required to support patients and families with the emotional aspects of their condition, helping them to understand it and empowering them to deal with it effectively in their own environments.

* Registered Child Nurse/ Learning Disability Nurse on the NMC Register
* Evidence of post registration CPD / Post registration qualification in Epilepsy management or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to degree / master's level equivalent FHEQ Level 6/7
* Recognised mentorship course
* To have or working towards an advanced health assessment module
* To have or working towards a Non-Medical Prescribing qualification

* Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
* Significant years post registration experience as a Specialist nurse at B6 or above in Paediatric Epilepsy or an associated speciality
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level

* Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality
* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes

* Ability to demonstrate specialist nursing knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to Epilepsy patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff

* Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding
