Volunteer Online British Sign Language Interpreter For Environmental Charity | East London Waterworks Park
Online British Sign Language interpreter wanted to help East London Waterworks Park facilitate community participation.
What difference will you make?
You will have a significant impact on the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds. We are an entirely volunteer-run charity and community group, and your help would enable people who use BSL to volunteer for us. We work mainly online with occasional in-person meet-ups. Our inclusivity strategy is very important to us, and we are working hard to ensure that our organization and the eventual park we plan to create are inclusive and welcoming to all. You would play an important part in this.
What are we looking for?
Fluency in British Sign Language preferred. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and empathetically. Commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding, and professional integrity. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team.
What will you be doing?
East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that won a 2024 New London Architecture award and has raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools, and community spaces. We are looking for a professional and compassionate BSL Interpreter to translate and interpret online and some in-person meetings for individuals who use BSL. The commitment would be for a minimum of 1.5 hours (one online meeting) a fortnight, on a weekday evening.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate BSL interpretation for online meetings and occasional in-person meet-ups.
- Work with East London Waterworks Park to ensure we are more inclusive for individuals who use BSL.
- Assist in reviewing and refining accessibility strategies for the charity’s materials where appropriate.
- You would also be very welcome to become a volunteer yourself in one of our main areas of communications, design, inclusivity, learning, fundraising, or governance.
