Junior Sister / Charge Nurse Paediatric Burns Unit - Band 6 The Paediatric Burns Unit at Chelsea and Westminster are looking for an enthusiastic Band 6 Paediatric Nurse to join their team. Mars Ward is the only Paediatric Burns Unit in London, and treats thousands of children every year. It is a 6 bedded unit, with one HDU bed, accepting children with up to 30% partial thickness burn injuries. There is also a nurse led dressing clinic adjacent to the ward, seeing up to 30 patients per day. We offer a range of burns courses such as: Burns Management Study day, the Foundations of Burns Care Course, Emergency Management of Severe Burns and the Burns and Plastics Pathway. The hours for this post consist of Long days and Long nights and weekend working. We are very enthusiastic about teaching and will give you all the tools needed in order for you to feel comfortable as a senior staff nurse on the burns unit.
Main duties of the job
The Burns Unit at Chelsea and Westminster hospital is somewhere you will gain skills in paediatric burns care, outpatients and HDU.
We offer a friendly and supportive working environment and work with a dynamic multidisciplinary team where education is seen as a priority. This Senior Staff Nurse post will be a clinical post; taking charge of the ward, completing referrals, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, though making autonomous decisions where appropriate. You will provide support to junior members of staff, ensuring shifts are safely staffed and that the nurses on duty have the experience and support to care for our complex patients. The role will also involve assisting the ward sisters to implement change, completing audits, education and assisting the appraisal and revalidation of junior nurses.
Job responsibilities
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* To manage a small group of staff under the support of a Band 7

* Assist the Clinical Specialist Nurse in education and improvement.
1. Clinical
* Assist on the assessing planning and implementing high quality burns care and evaluating care options for patients in line with the Trust values and objectives
* Lead on the complex clinical care for burns patients and provide sound evidence based clinical advice as required to staff and patients
* To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.
* Ensure the safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication, in accordance with established Trust policy
* Promote and maintain patient and staff safety at all times.
* Coordinate the referral and transfer of burns patients across the London and Southeast Burns Network.
* Coordinate discharges and transfers, promoting timely and safe processes for them
* Ensure that patient flow and the management of beds is effective and safe and write discharge summaries for day case admissions
* Ensure the delivery of high quality end of life care in line with national guidelines.
* Maintain a good understanding and implementation of clinical escalation procedures as required
* Ensure that the team promote and adhere to the Trust safeguarding polices and assist in the detection, management and prevention of safeguarding issues
* Undertake effective multi professionally work with colleagues to deliver high quality care. Including the participation of Clinical Governance.
* Coordinate and manage outpatients both on the ward and in burns dressing clinic.
* Work with clinical lead and ward sisters to collect and disseminate information with other members of the MDT
* Maintain a safe working environment, including ensuring equipment is safe, and used in line with Trust policy and values
* Have an awareness of current professional and clinical developments within the field of burns and promote this to others.
2. Leadership and management:
* Work closely with the ward sisters and deputise for them in their absence which will involve being the shift co-ordinator for the unit on a regular basis.
* Manage ward staffing on a day to day basis to ensure effective use of resources (including the prudent use of bank and agency staff)
* Assist the Band 7s with the management of a team of junior staff.
* Maintain team records of sickness, appraisals and revalidation.
* To be a preceptor to Burns Unit staff members and other staff allocated to the team, including nursing students and post registration course members.
* Orientate new staff and professional visitors to the burns service.
* Participate in the recruitment and selection of new staff.
* Assist in the management of change within the Unit.
* Ensure cost effective use of resources including ordering of supplies and promote an awareness of cost effectiveness in other staff.
* Maintain and assist in the development of unit information systems and computer literacy skills in oneself and others.
* Work within policies and procedures ratified within the Trust and Unit. Become familiar with new policies and procedures and know how to access them as required.
* Maintain a safe and acceptable environment to patients, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning.
* To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and in liaison with the pharmacy team.
* To assist in local audit and feeding information back to all members of the MDT
3. Education & research:
* To be aware of the educational needs of student nurses acting as a mentor and assessors. Work in close liaison with the Clinical Nurse Specialist in educating staff.
* Conduct regular appraisals for staff member within the team.
* Assist in the orientation and development of new staff to the area, including the acting as a mentor or preceptor.
* Assist with the organisation of and participate in educational activities (e.g. Team Teaching Tuesdays) within the clinical area.
* Be involved in any research based projects which may be undertaken within the burns service.
* Recognise and use spontaneous learning opportunities
* Participate in clinical supervision / acting as supervisor
* Assist the Clinical Nurse Specialist in the education of all staff including burns competencies
* To attend appropriate education programmes to develop oneself and team in accordance with the needs of the service.
* To adhere at all times to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and maintain professional registration
* Ensure mandatory training is completed yearly and a satisfactory appraisal is in date
* Undertake a professional development plan and demonstrate achievement of objectives

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Post registration education in relevant speciality eg Burns Course / Critical care
Skills and knowledge
* Ability to demonstrate initiative.

* Commitment to teaching and learning for self and others
* IT skills e.g., word, excel, outlook and hospital database experience

Experience
* Experience leading all /part of a clinical team in practice.
* Experience of teaching and supporting learners including students and new starters.
* Substantial experience working in Burns or plastic surgery
* Experience of working with an electronic patient record and other basic IT systems
* Wide variety of clinical experience.
