Job responsibilities As the lead specialist in their own area and with guidance from the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons the post-holder will carry out operative procedures whilst assisting with all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care. The post-holder will be expected to perform these duties with a high degree of clinical knowledge. The post-holder will work closely with the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons, junior medical staff and other surgical care practitioners in developing this role to its full potential. You will be responsible for maintaining quality and standards in cardiothoracic surgical care to the inpatient areas that cardiothoracic services cover. You will be expected to contribute to the development of cardiothoracic services across the Trust. You will be responsible for maintaining a Cardiothoracic Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) led approach to patient care delivery, including carrying out and demonstrating advanced clinical assessment. You will ensure appropriate management of patients in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest, surgical and medical emergencies, in accordance with the Trusts and Resuscitation Council UKs Advanced Life Support procedures. You will take an active role in maintaining audit, research and the implementation of evidence-based practice. You will have a responsibility for support and education, working closely with the Trust Lead Cardiothoracic Surgeon and other designated surgeons and staff. The post-holder will ensure that appropriate support and advice are provided to patients and their families / carers, either as inpatients or outpatients. To communicate extremely complicated strands of clinical information which may be conflicting and multi-stranded, including for business cases. Maintain and promote effective communication, both verbally and in writing, with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Wards or Departments, including formal presentations of information relating to your service. Effective communication with surgical and multi-disciplinary team and Wards or Departments to provide seamless and effective care management. Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of objectives for the service. To demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients, visitors / relatives / carers and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues and managers, both verbally and in writing. Contribute to the investigation of complaints, accident reports and untoward incidents within the department / wards, in line with Trust Policies and procedures, and implement recommendations for action. Network with multi-professional colleagues within and outside the Trust and encourage others to do the same. To be actively involved in the development of Trust policies and procedures relating to your service, providing specialist input, leading their implementation and reinforcing their use. Propose policy or service changes for own specialist area that may impact other disciplines. Ensure the provision of care is in accordance with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trusts Polices & procedures, focusing in particular on patients clinical needs, using specialist knowledge and current trends, education and practise. Ensure compliance to Trust policies and procedures amongst the surgical and multi-disciplinary team. In partnership with other members of the surgical and multi-disciplinary team, ensure seamless patient care is provided through the development of protocols and pathways, identifying and initiating these as required. Contribute to the development of guidelines, protocols and projects relating to specialist areas. To participate in developments relating to clinical documentation in own speciality. To promote and ensure that surgical documentation is accountable and defensible and maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records) and the audit of records to measure and evaluate care taking place as required. Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, including support staff and staff in training, to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives. Where required, provide effective orientation of staff, including welcome to the department and early objective setting and follow-up. Where required, undertake appraisals. Develop and maintain a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors. Be aware of the change management process and contribute to this process. To manage the efficient and effective use of supplies, provisions and equipment within delegated budgets. In conjunction with line manager identify, analyse and discuss cost pressures and financial constraints in a timely manner. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken, in accordance with the Trust Risk Management Policy, providing expert advice and focusing on the principles of a learning organisation. Maintain data quality standards for ICHIS for department / ward(s) or similar systems to be implemented in due course. To be competent in the use of the electronic information systems in place for ordering relevant tests and to access results; also those that are currently under development. Maintain, update and develop own personal and professional knowledge and skills, and those of the team, by participating in the Trusts 1:1 process, annual review system and PDP development. Plan implement and evaluate the education programmes of trainee Surgical Care Practitioner(s). Facilitate Junior Doctors training whilst teaching them specific surgical skills and techniques. Collaborate with the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons and divisional managers regarding the ongoing expansion of the role. To ensure Data Protection regulations are adhered to. To participate in Trust and CPG initiatives in developing services. To update knowledge in the light of current research and practice. Provide cover for colleagues as appropriate. Undertake any other duties requested as appropriate to the banding and role. Attend Trust-wide initiatives / committees when required.
