Description
As a Trading Standards Officer, you will play a critical role in protecting consumers and businesses by ensuring compliance with various trading standards legislation. This position involves investigating potential breaches of consumer protection laws, enforcing regulations, and providing guidance to the public and local businesses. You will work to ensure that businesses operate fairly and honestly, which includes monitoring product safety, preventing unfair trading practices, and tackling fraud. As part of your responsibilities, you will engage with stakeholders, including industry representatives and community groups, to educate them about legal standards and promote best practices. The role requires a proactive approach to identify issues that may affect consumers and businesses alike, ensuring that risks are mitigated effectively through investigation and enforcement. You will also participate in outreach programs, helping to raise awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities within the community. Your work will contribute significantly to creating a safe and fair trading environment, ultimately enhancing consumer confidence and supporting a vibrant local economy. Responsibilities
Investigate complaints and reports of non-compliance with trading standards legislation.
Conduct inspections of businesses and products to ensure compliance with safety and labeling regulations.
Provide advice and support to businesses on trading standards issues to promote best practices.
Compile and maintain accurate records and reports of investigations and inspections conducted.
Engage with the community to educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities under trading standards law.
Work collaboratively with other regulatory bodies, law enforcement, and community organizations to address complex cases.
Prepare and present evidence in court or tribunal settings when necessary to support enforcement actions.
Requirements
A relevant degree or qualification in a related field, such as law, public health, or consumer protection.
Experience in regulatory compliance, enforcement, or a related role is advantageous.
Strong understanding of trading standards legislation and consumer rights law.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective engagement with stakeholders.
Ability to conduct investigations and analyze evidence objectively and effectively.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
