Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Support Worker to join our friendly and energetic team on Waddington Ward. We are looking for a committed, enthusiastic, and self-motivated health professional to join our well-established team.
Waddington Unit is a 26 bedded acute Haematology and Oncology ward that cares for male and female patients. The ward has a high acuity, fast-paced clinical admissions setting that cares for acutely unwell patients as a result of haematological and oncological conditions such as spinal cord compression and neutropenic sepsis, as well as facilitating the delivery of chemotherapy.
Main duties of the job
The ward admits patients as either an emergency through the Emergency Department, through the oncology assessment unit, or self-referral, via outpatient clinics or electively for chemotherapy, oncology, and haematology treatment.
The healthcare team is supported by a team of healthcare support workers, Band 5 nurses, band 6 deputy sisters, a clinical educator, and housekeepers, as well as the ward manager. We have a medically engaged team who also provide ward-based training and education to all staff.
About the role
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, you will work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to contribute to the provision of the highest standards of patient care delivered with dignity, respect, and compassion. The role involves working as an autonomous health care professional and will include providing holistic palliative care to end-of-life patients, as well as managing the conditions and side effects associated with cancer. You will be responsible for providing a high level of care and support, working either days or nights on a full-time basis alongside the multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications
Essential
* Literacy and numeracy qualifications equivalent to Functional Skills level 1 or above (e.g., GCSE grade C or above)
Desirable
* Literacy and numeracy qualification equivalent to Functional Skills level 2 (e.g., GCSE grade C or above) which are necessary to undertake the apprenticeship
* NVQ Level 2/3 in a Health Related area or equivalent experience
* Completed apprenticeship in relevant field of practice
* Successful completion of the Care Certificate
* ECDL qualification or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills & Aptitudes
Essential
* Understanding the role of the Health Care Support Worker
* Ability to manage time effectively
* Ability to work effectively on an individual basis and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
* Ability to work in a demanding and busy environment
* Good customer care skills
* Good written and verbal communication skills
