The Recruitment Co are currently working with a large Public Sector body in recruiting for a Beef and Sheep Industrial.
The successful candidate will report to the Beef and Sheep Herd Manager/Team Leader and liaise closely with scientific staff at Hillsborough, Loughgall, Crossnacreevy, Stormont and Newforge Lane Belfast, the successful applicant's duties will include the following:-
1. Feeding cattle and sheep, including preparing experimental rations to specific experimental requirements, normally using a fixed-boom handler, tractor and mixer wagon, but also by hand or using a mini mixer. Ration preparation requires good numeracy skills. Recording feed offered and refusals both on paper and electronically.
2. Pasture/grazing management, including grass cover monitoring, allocating pasture to stock, setting up fence lines, sowing fertiliser, topping paddocks, weed control and checking water troughs. Using decision support tools, such as Agri-net to assist with grazing management.
3. Maintaining high animal health and welfare standards, including identifying and treating sick animals, routine health management, dosing, vaccination, hoof care, assisting veterinary practitioners. Adherence to strict bio-security protocols is essential.
Recording and reporting on animal health.
4. Fertility management, including heat detection, artificial insemination, assisting at calving/lambing, and ensuring the health and welfare of calves and cows / lambs and ewes. Maintaining fertility and performance records.
5. General livestock management duties, including bedding livestock houses and calving / lambing pens (for example, with straw, sawdust and lime), clipping cattle, dagging sheep.
6. Recording detailed herd/flock health and management details, both electronically and hard copy, as appropriate. Assisting scientific staff to take measurements, and occasionally involved in collecting samples within experiments.
7. Maintaining overall cleanliness and tidiness of the beef and sheep units, including
cleaning and disinfecting animal accommodation, brushing, power hosing, grass cutting, weed control/management, silo management.
8. On occasions may be required to operate other specialised and nonspecialised farm machinery, including forklifts, diggers, land rovers, rough terrain-vehicles. Day-to-day care and maintenance of all machinery used.
9. All types of general farm duties, and any other duties that may arise, including dairy young-stock management.10. The post holder may at times have to assist within other areas within the Farmed Platform to manage Industrial staff for periods to cover absences.
Applicants must demonstrate in their application form that they possess the following criteria, by the closing date:
1. Two GCSE's including English and Maths, grade C or above, or a recognised level 2 or higher in Agriculture/Land based Technology/ or equivalent in a relevant area.
2. Demonstrate, by way of examples, at least 12 months experience of working with a sheep flock and Beef/Dairy Herd
3. Demonstrate, by way of examples, experience in all of the following:
a) Pasture/grazing management,
b) Heat detection/Fertility,
c) General livestock husbandry skills including animal Health and Welfare and have knowledge of sustainable farming principles.
4. Demonstrate, by way of examples, experience driving tractors and operating PTO shaft
driven machinery.
