Job overview
To provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to both the patients and their relatives within King's College Hospital.
To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse/Head of Department.
To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of nurses within the ward complement.
To act as a clinical resource within the ward and across the Care Group as necessary.
To act as a positive role model to junior staff members, ensuring that all staff recognize their responsibility to deliver services in a high-quality, courteous, patient-focused manner and to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Main duties of the job
1. To act as a team leader in supporting the PIU service including with the administration of IV Biologic infusions.
2. To assist in the delivery of nursing care for patients under the care of endocrinology, rheumatology, immunology, gastroenterology, neurology.
3. To assist in managing the PIU case load.
4. To provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families, and professionals following diagnosis and treatment.
5. To instigate and order biochemical blood investigations, and recognize abnormal results.
6. To ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care, assessing health, health-related and nursing needs of patients, their families, and other carers.
7. To be actively involved in assessing the short-term needs of the clinical area and ensure that they are met.
8. To assist in the delivery of a seamless service through Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) processes and communication.
9. To ensure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocols.
10. To follow up patients under supervision as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make informed choices about their treatment.
11. To actively involve service users in providing feedback on their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
1. To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
2. To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of any patients receiving treatment in the ward/department.
3. To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the needs of patients on the Ward on an ongoing basis, coordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.
4. To accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information about the patients’ condition, promptly report changes, and instigate remedial action as appropriate.
5. To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice, and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their relatives.
6. To ensure that accurate records are maintained reflecting both changes in the patient’s condition and the treatment delivered.
7. To ensure that patients and their relatives are updated regularly with accurate information, ensuring it is presented in a way they understand.
8. To ensure that Clinical Guidelines are implemented and to be actively involved in auditing practice.
9. To uphold high standards of nursing care, according to existing policies and standards.
10. To support the Ward Managers and Modern Matron in processes of continuous quality improvement.
11. To contribute to the health education of patients and their families, ensuring appropriate advice and support is provided.
Education and Research
1. To act as a mentor to junior staff members, responsible for the orientation, supervision, and ongoing development of junior and student nurses.
2. To promote and encourage the application of research and evidence-based practices.
3. To participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area as appropriate.
Management
1. To manage the clinical workload effectively, ensuring care is prioritized appropriately.
2. To contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost-effective service.
3. To assist with the ongoing organization of the ward, coordinating the activities of the clinical area.
4. To communicate varied and complicated information (verbally and in writing) in a way that is understood.
Person specification
Education
* 1st level Registered General Nurse
* Further professional studies relevant to the clinical area
* Mentorship programme or equivalent teaching qualification
Experience/Skills
* Demonstrable clinical expertise, relevant to the area.
* Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels.
* Team building and working skills – able to lead a team to achieve results.
