Wessex Water has an exciting opportunity available for a Process Scientist to work as part of a multi-discipline team, ensuring we meet our environmental compliance standards for our water recycling centres across Dorset.
If you have wastewater process science experience working in the water, engineering or environment industry then we want to hear from you!
This role involves a mixture of office and field-based working. The role is primarily based in Dorchester, but will involve travelling around West Dorset.
What you'll do
Wessex Water treats 480 million litres of sewage from 2.8 million customers in the South West. Our Scientists help ensure that we not only comply with all the regulatory requirements but make sure there is no detrimental impact to the environment through our operations.
You will join the South Science team, taking responsibility for ensuring water recycling compliance and process performance with your local operations team in West Dorset. In addition, there will be regular engagement with colleagues across the wider Wessex Water business on a variety of interesting projects.
As a Process Scientist, you will ensure compliance with quality standards at water recycling centres, including numerical, descriptive and flow permits. You will plan and install measures to improve quality and lead initiatives to reduce operational costs.
Additionally, you will be involved with the following:
1. monitoring and optimising the effectiveness of sewage treatment processes
2. providing process support in urgent operational issues
3. providing technical support to operational staff to protect and maintain quality
4. innovating new operational practices
5. collaborating with engineering and construction colleagues to support the installation and commissioning of new plant to meet tighter regulatory requirements
6. liaising with various internal and external stakeholders, including the Environment Agency.
What you'll need
You will need to be an experienced process scientist, who has experience monitoring and optimising processes to meet regulatory permits, understands the importance of environmental regulations and has a methodical and analytical approach to your work. You will also act as a role model for health and safety.
Previous water industry experience would be ideal. However, we know that there are great waste treatment scientists who work in other sectors such as engineering, manufacturing and environmental companies, who could transfer their process science experience into the water industry.
You are going to be joining a very welcoming and supportive team. To build on this, you'll need to be able to build professional and supportive relationships with your fellow colleagues, as well as being able to confidently engage and influence various internal stakeholders.
In addition, you will have:
1. a degree or equivalent level of experience in a science, environmental or engineering subject
2. sound knowledge of environmental permitting and wastewater treatment processes
3. COSHH experience would be highly desirable
4. IT literacy
5. data analysis skills – comfortable using Microsoft Excel to an intermediate level
6. a valid full UK driving license.
What you'll receive
1. Total pension contributions up to 20%.
2. Career progression and professional development opportunities.
3. 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
4. The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
5. A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
6. Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
7. A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
8. Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
9. One paid volunteering day each year.
