An experienced and competent self-employed personal assistant is required for a highly intelligent ten-year-old autistic boy living in Truro.
He also has ADHD, sensory processing issues, ARFID, hydrocephalus, and mild cerebral palsy.
The ideal candidate will be light-hearted, playful, and able to build a trusting relationship. Experience of working with children with similar needs is essential, and Makaton knowledge would be a distinct advantage.
Communication is usually one-way, but he enjoys engaging in conversations about his interests, which currently include maths, physics, space, and chemistry. He has a vivid imagination, blending reality with fiction, a great sense of humour, and a preference for adult company due to their predictability.
The role involves spending time with him in the family home to build rapport, socialising, playing, and laughing together. Once a strong relationship is established, the next phase will involve supporting him in socialising with peers and joining group activities.
The successful candidate must be able to read his cues, knowing when to change direction to avoid dysregulation and keep interactions enjoyable.
There are four hours per week available, with flexible scheduling to suit the candidate’s availability.
If you are patient, empathetic, and confident in supporting children with unique needs, this could be a highly rewarding opportunity.
Rates of Pay: £14.70 per hour for self-employed personal assistants, £12.00 per hour for employed personal assistants.
