Why Arup?
The successful design, development and maintenance of our water infrastructure requires the integration of many disciplines. Arup’s water team has wide-ranging skills spanning advisory and specialist technical services. We apply them on all types of projects, from flood risk management and water resource planning, to dam engineering, treatment works design and river engineering.
The main focus of Arup’s Water team in Sheffield is stormwater. We advise our clients on the risk of flooding at strategic (city or region-wide) or site scale. We model the movement of water and the risks associated with flooding, using integrated hydraulic models. We plan and design nature-based solutions to manage stormwater and provide wider benefits in the built and rural environment. This team has enjoyed strong organic growth, but demand for practical and rigorously proven solutions continues to rise.
Arup has a long track record in the UK water industry working with all the major water companies, local authorities and the Environment Agency. In the current round of procurement for the AMP8 frameworks Arup recently secured major framework commissions with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Thames Water, as well as its continuing framework with Severn Trent Water. We are continuing to actively bid for other major AMP8 frameworks across the UK Water Industry.

The Opportunity
Arup in Sheffield are driving the charge to retrofit blue-green infrastructure into the urban landscape at scale, as a tool to reduce flood risk and pollution spills. In fact, we’re winning awards for it. Part of the Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience (MSFR) project, Arup was appointed to help Severn Trent design and implement an urban flood resilience scheme based on biodiversity interventions instead of traditional drainage systems. Turning the town into a sponge, these blue green interventions will free up capacity in sewers by capturing large volumes of surface water. We work closely with our landscape team and other disciplines to create amazing solutions such as Mansfield, with multiple benefits for people and biodiversity. Our water company clients have seen the potential; they want to increase investment in retrofit blue-green infrastructure to solve problems in other towns and cities.
To take advantage of this growth and our future vision, we need an engaging professional to help deliver projects. We are looking for a passionate advocate of nature-based solutions; someone who wants to play a part in helping the UK to embrace blue green infrastructure and all its benefits. You should appreciate the benefits and value of blue-green infrastructure, SuDS and other nature-based solutions, and be willing to promote it to our clients and collaborators. You might be digital-savvy and have an interest in using digital tools to solve complex problems or eliminate repetitive tasks. You will probably have worked on design or delivery projects within the water sector, and your background could be as an engineer, a scientist or in a related discipline. We appreciate the value of diversity of education and experiences because it allows us to bring new perspectives and alternative solutions.
Is this role right for you?
In this role you will provide support across the team with business development, project management and technical excellence. Typical responsibilities include preparing proposals, providing hands-on input to our projects, and writing technical reports to convey complex concepts for our clients. You will be comfortable talking to government, authorities and significant clients, and presenting at conferences.
You will be able to speak knowledgeably about the benefits of blue-green infrastructure, identify opportunities and link stakeholders. As a senior member of the team, you will also provide line management and development for our junior team members. Reviewing and appraising the work of others to maintain a high-quality output across the team.
Lastly, you will be steering and contributing to project meetings, both internally and externally, and monitor project or team budgets to ensure a favourable commercial outcome.
We are keen to speak to people who have:
1. Working knowledge of the design of SuDS or nature based solutions, in a retrofit context or on new build developments.
2. An understanding of hydraulic and hydrological processes relating to stormwater management.
3. A desire to embrace digital technologies and innovations to find efficiencies in design processes. GIS, FME and/or Python skills would be an advantage.
4. Previously delivered civil engineering drainage designs from concept to detailed design stages
5. Previously worked within regulated industries such as the water/nuclear sector
