As the Senior Manager - Data Science (Machine Learning) at Virgin Atlantic, you'll serve as both the thought leader and technical delivery leader in Data Science, specialising in Traditional ML, Causal ML, and cutting-edge Generative AI (Foundational Models). Your leadership will shape the strategic roadmap for ML and AI initiatives, ensuring every project aligns seamlessly with our business objectives.
In this pivotal role, you'll lead the development, testing, and deployment of high-impact ML models, driving their integration into real-world business use cases. Your expertise will ensure that these models are optimised, well-documented, and maintained to the highest standards for reproducibility and compliance.
As the central ML expert, you will provide technical guidance to stakeholders and collaborate with business users to leverage machine learning in solving critical challenges. Your influence will extend to coaching and mentoring the Data Science, Engineering, Advanced Analytics and Product teams.

Day to day
1. Communicate complex ML concepts and results to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
2. Serve as the thought leader and technical delivery leader in Data Science and Machine Learning, specializing in Traditional ML, Causal ML, and Generative AI.
3. Set and optimize standards for ML model development, curation, maintenance, and provisioning with engineering and platform teams.
4. Develop and oversee the strategic roadmap for ML and AI initiatives, ensuring alignment with business goals.
5. Lead the integration of ML models with business users and applications, facilitating seamless interactions.
6. Implement best practices for ML model lifecycle management, including experimentation, versioning, and efficacy testing.
7. Continuously assess new ML methodologies and technologies for business feasibility, driving innovation.
8. Provide coaching, technical guidance, and support to both the Data Science team and senior leadership.
About you
1. Extensive experience in data science and machine learning within a senior leadership role overseeing ML projects and teams.
2. Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
3. Deep expertise in Traditional (Predictive) ML and Causal ML, with a strong track record of developing, deploying, and maintaining high-performance ML models.
4. Strong understanding of the fundamentals of Foundational Models, familiarity with the practicalities and architectures of Generative AI and a deep curiosity of the field.
5. Proficiency in ML model lifecycle management, including experimentation, versioning, efficacy testing, and productionization, with experience in ML and AI Ops processes.
6. Strong knowledge of cloud technologies and tools, particularly in environments such as Azure, AWS, and Databricks.
7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex ML concepts to non-technical stakeholders and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
