What you’ll be doing:
1. Leadership: Lead Monese’s in-house legal department and ensure the team supports company goals and strategies, aligning it with the business objectives and requirements. Advise the CEO on overall legal and regulatory strategy - member of the Leadership Team.
2. Legal advice: Provide prompt and succinct advice to stakeholders, including the CEO and the Board, often to right timescales. Responsible for all legal matters, including commercial matters and corporate transactions. Ensure Monese stays compliant in the territories in which it operates (currently UK and EU, including Estonia). Handle all legal disputes and ensure that company’s IP is protected at all times. Develop and enforce best practices and template documentation, including new policies and processes, to protect and enhance the company’s objectives and endeavours. Manage the precedent bank, ensuring precedents are up to date with legal developments and accommodate key commercial principles and business requirements.
3. Risk management: Identify and mitigate legal-related risks. Monitor relevant legal and regulatory changes and ensure relevant developments are reflected in company’s practices and processes.
4. Stakeholder engagement: Collaborate with key stakeholders, partners, and internal teams, to ensure alignment and successful delivery of objectives. Must collaborate cross-functionally with finance, HR, commercial / procurement and banking teams.
5. Team management: Responsible for the management and development of in-house team and relationships with external law firms. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and high performance.
6. Budgeting: Managing the costs/budgeting, suppliers, and contractors within the legal team. Create operational efficiencies.
What we are looking for :
7. English language – native or fluent
8. English qualified solicitor or barrister – PQE (post qualified experience) of at least 7 years
9. Extensive in-house experience preferred
10. Experience managing a team, or at least supervising and mentoring junior/s
11. Solid commercial experience, preferably in finance services or payments
12. Strong and tested judgment i.e. make effective, productive decisions aligned with company objectives while taking into consideration multiple inputs and potential risks in addition to legal ramifications
13. Able to deal hands on with complicated matters including compliance, litigation and business processes
14. Experience working for a start-up or scale-up (Series A or B)
15. Agile and responsive
16. Hands-on, strategic and commercially minded senior lawyer
17. Well-rounded experience across commercial matters and legal / regulatory issues in payments and financial products, gained either in private practice or in an in-house role (experience in financial services is preferred)
18. Our Head of Legal must be a multi-specialist with exceptional drafting skills and solution(s) oriented mindset
19. Strong interpersonal and communication skills – capable of building rapport quickly and establishing strong working relationships
20. Trusted adviser to the business, capable of giving decisive advice
21. Confident communicator and negotiator, capable of managing multiple stakeholders across the business
22. Experienced in leading and managing complex, high-value transactions from start to finish
23. Approachable and measured with all direct reports, key stakeholders and partners
24. Agile mindset, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make decisions quickly
