The Role
We have a fantastic opportunity for a talented and innovative Highway Engineer to join our forward-thinking local authority using the latest Highway Improvement techniques to manage its network.
Based within North Somerset, boasting both beautiful coastlines and rural countryside, you will play a key role in this essential function, working on highway improvements across the region. Involved across all aspects of our exciting projects, you will be involved on design production and concepts utilizing best practice, developing engineering solutions as well as using your technical expertise within the team on larger projects. Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closed by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Manage a caseload of technical projects or inspections to deliver the operational programme.
2. Assist with the investigation and preparation and organisation of all stages of scheme identification, preparation of funding bids, design and contract documentation including cost estimates so that maintenance and improvement works are implemented within budget forecasts and programmed dates.
3. Attend public meetings to provide technical information about particular schemes and represent the highway/water management authority.
4. Communicate effectively with contractors, colleagues and the public, both verbally and in writing, through the appropriate use of case notes and other record keeping within information sharing protocols and record keeping policies.
5. Process and analyse data related to service area and make recommendations for change or action.
About You
We are looking for an individual who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
1. Level 4 or above qualification and experience, relevant to one of more of the service areas.
2. Ability to manage/organise own work to meet agreed deadlines.
3. Ability to engage with businesses and partner agencies within the relevant codes of practice.
4. Knowledge and understanding of technical standards, safe working practices and legislation for service areas.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Approved professional qualification relevant to the area of work (eg EngTech) or extensive practical experience of working within the service area, giving rise to a variety of technical skills and sound understanding of the standards, legal responsibilities, work practices and processes relevant to the role.
2. Experience of supervising others within the same field of work.
