Job Summary
The post holder will receive, dispense and hand out prescriptions, dispense inpatient, outpatient medications and provide other support services to the Pharmacy department, including the receipt of orders, storage and supply of Pharmaceuticals Controlled drugs and other stocks, ward top-ups.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
* Communication
Pharmacy reception duties including receiving prescriptions from outpatients, ward staff and other clients, take payment for prescriptions and forward prescriptions to the correct location for dispensing.
Identify, resolve, or refer any prescription queries at point of reception.
Answer telephone enquiries from staff and patients, resolve or refer as necessary.
Hand out completed prescriptions with appropriate counselling, under the supervision of the senior pharmacy technician in charge.
Under instruction from a senior member of the team, arrange delivery of medications to patients home address, including labelling and secure sealing of medication packages, contacting patients and accurate record keeping of all deliveries.
* Analytical and Planning
Perform departmental expiry date checks to schedule.
Maintain supplies of non-drug items including controlled stationary e.g. FP10 prescriptions and controlled drug registers, ensuring accurate records are maintained.
* Clinical Duties
Restock medication ensuring stock rotation with the dispensaries.
Help to maintain a clean working environment in all areas of pharmacy.
Dispense Inpatient and discharge prescriptions both within the pharmacy department and out on the wards using the mobile dispensing trolleys.
Process prescriptions using the pharmacy stock control and electronic prescribing system. Select, count, package and label prescription items according to department procedure. Make records as necessary e.g., endorse prescription; make an entry into the controlled drug register.
Dispense Outpatient prescriptions. Process the prescriptions using the pharmacy stock control and electronic prescribing system. Participate in late shift, weekend and bank holiday rotas.
* Policy and Service Development
Follow departmental standard operating procedures at all times.
Assist in updating standard operating procedures as requested by the Operational Lead Technician.
Direct service users to pharmacy policies on the Trust intranet as needed.
* Financial and Physical Resources
Assist in running adhoc and planned reports using pharmacy IT systems as requested.
Perform departmental stock checks, counting and escalating discrepancies.
Process homecare prescriptions and invoices.
Assess suitability of pharmaceuticals for return to stock. Return items to stock using the pharmacy stock control system as authorised or dispose of according to departmental waste procedure as appropriate.
* Staff Management
Not applicable to this role.
* Information Resources
Provide support to end users of the pharmacy Wellsky system.
Assist in the maintenance of all pharmacy IT systems.
Qualifications
Essential
* Good general education including Maths and English grade C/4 or above.
Desirable
* Hold NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy OR Hold the NPA or an equivalent dispensing qualification.
* Previous hospital experience in a similar role Pharmacy experience.
Knowledge
Essential
* Demonstrates an ability to accurately follow instructions and maintain competence in a busy environment.
