Subject Matter Expertise: You will write research and directly engage with clients, applying your in-depth knowledge of software and platform engineering technologies, technical capabilities of products/services, and deployment best practices. You will advise clients on architecting, implementing and operating:
* DevOps platforms, tools and technologies
* Cloud-native applications and software engineering platforms
* Infrastructure-as-Code practices and tools
* Developer self-service capabilities, developer experience and developer portals
* AI usage and inclusion in software platforms and products
* Observability to drive resilience, performance and security of software applications
About the role:
Our team is the technical backbone of Gartner’s software engineering research. We identify, influence, and share best practices, tools and technologies across the software design, build and run lifecycle. This analyst role is on the Gartner for Software Engineering Technical Professionals team and will focus primarily on platform engineering.

* Develop thought leading research.
* Partner with your teammates, other analysts and research communities to advance technical research.
* Advise clients on strategic and tactical technology challenges.
* Deliver presentations at Gartner events, including Summits and Symposia.
* Attain industry leadership by responding to press inquiries and speaking at industry events.
* Support Gartner sales with client visits and consultation.
* Contribute to research and agenda planning.
What you will need:
Gartner is seeking a technical professional with practitioner level platform engineering expertise. Whilst hands-on technical knowledge and experience is critical, successful candidates will exhibit a love for continuous learning as well as a keen awareness of industry-shaping trends in software engineering.
Specific requirements for this role are:
* 10+ years of relevant experience in software engineering.
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; Graduate degree preferred.
* Excellent writing and research skills, coupled with strong analytical skills.
* Excellent presentation skills, including small to large audiences (500+ people).
* Expertise in building out DevOps Platforms, e.g., GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Atlassian, Harness.
* Expertise in building and scaling resilient cloud-native applications including:
o Microservices architecture (MSA)
o Platforms such as aPaaS, fPaaS, CaaS, or K8s (one or more cloud providers, with additional exposure to Openshift, VMWare Tanzu as a further enhancement).
* Experience using Infrastructure-as-Code including firsthand experience with tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK/Cloud Formation, Chef, Puppet, Red Hat Ansible, Pulumi, or Crossplane.
* Experience in enabling developer self-service through developer portals.
o Expertise with Backstage, OpsLevel, Cortex, Port, or similar as a further enhancement.
* Application of AI to platform delivery or inclusion of AI capabilities as part of a developer platform.
* Experience using observability and monitoring to improve the performance, reliability, resilience, and security of custom build software applications.
