Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose
Under the supervision of Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, The Research Assistant performs laboratory procedures to support microbiology and animal research. The Research Assistant reports to the Principal Investigator of the project.
Essential Functions
* Position is a grant-funded part-time, 20 hours per week position.
* Conduct research experiments, analyze research data, and provide reports, as needed.
* Must be knowledgeable of and strictly adhere to research protocol involving animal models. Training will be provided for working with mouse models.
* Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens, chemical hazards, and/or biohazardous materials may reasonably be anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.
* Proficiency with MS Office, Word, Excel to produce research reports and collect data.
Minimum Qualifications
* Completion of college-level courses either in biology, chemistry, or related field.
* One (1) year of experience performing basic laboratory procedures and safety.
* One (1) year of experience with research techniques. Training from college coursework is acceptable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of:
* Extensive knowledge of research techniques used in microbiology, molecular biology, and protein analysis.
* Experience doing research with mouse models.
Ability to:
* Operate (or be trained to operate) laboratory equipment.
* Work with chemical and biohazardous material.
* Draft standard operating procedures and follow established safety protocols.
* Multitask and be flexible in organizing and prioritizing work.
* Work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with others.
* Record and communicate results clearly.
* Analyze results and draw scientific conclusions based on the data.
Other:
* Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
* Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
* Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Hiring Range
Hiring Range: $20.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
