Craigclowan School & Nursery seeks a 0.6 FTE Teacher of Music for August 2025. This is an exciting time to join Craigclowan, with the m usic provision at the school being restructured following Craigclowan’s recent merger with Glenalmond College. We are looking to appoint an inspirational musician, to be the principal classroom music teacher across all year groups, from ages 3 to 13.
This role will be line-managed on a day to day basis with a reporting line into the Director of Music at Glenalmond, who will take overall responsibility for music provision across both schools. The Craigclowan Teacher of Music will enjoy a considerable amount of autonomy in the delivery of class music, and, as such, it is anticipated that the new appointment will be a keen advocate for teaching group music at this level, with an interest in developing a through school curriculum in liaison with the DoM.
Although this is a 0.6 FTE position, there is very much the opportunity for the role to expand in the future. The Craigclowan music programme is anticipated to develop strongly outside the classroom, an area in which b oth teachers will be involved, whether in ch! oral, instrumental, ensemble or musical theatre environments. It is expected that applicants will have sufficient keyboard skills to be able to accompany pupils on the piano, lead rehearsals and assemblies, and arrange and accompany pupils at lunchtime concerts.
In addition to the classroom timetable at Craigclowan, the Teacher of Music will also have the opportunity to participate in the music programme at Glenalmond. The nature of this involvement will depend entirely upon the strengths and interests of individual applicants, but might in due course include leading ensembles, accompanying, classroom teaching and/or wider involvement in the life of our busy boarding school.
It is anticipated that this role will appeal to a primary specialist who also wishes to have the opportunity potentially to work with staff and pupils at secondary level. We seek a musician excited to be given the opportunity to make their mark across both schools, but at Craigclowan in particular.
Staff & Instrumental Teaching
The two full-time music staff, Dr Tim Ridley (Director of Music) Head of Pipes & Drums are based at Glenalmond and have their own offices in the Music School there. Around 25 talented visiting music teachers come to Glenalmond and Craigclowan each week, with many staff travelling up from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The immediate administration of their work, and the timetabling of individual pupil lessons at both schools, is dealt with by a Music School Administrator at Glenalmond, who works Monday to Friday in the Glenalmond Music School General Office. (Children often have to change lessons due to conflict and therefore additional time needed for the teacher to manage this)
For further details regarding the post, or for an informal chat, please contact the Director of Music, Dr Tim Ridley, timridley@glenalmondcollege.co.uk or telephone 01738 842138.
