We are looking to recruit 2 8a matrons in SJs Emergency Department (1 substantive 8a matron and 1 acting 8a Matron (for 9 months) to cover maternity leave.
We are looking for nurses who are passionate, driven and highly motivated and who want to make a real difference at 8a matron level, in an amazing and dedicated CSU - the Urgent care CSU at Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
The post holders will help strengthen the existing Urgent Care 8a matron team at SJUH. This will build on the existing leadership visibility across these departments and help support the CSU nursing workforce plan for the future, while also supporting our quality and safety agenda, and improving our patient pathways and experience while in our departments.
We are looking for hardworking, visionary and ambitious leaders, who have the experience of managing acute clinical areas and patient pathways. We are looking for individuals who have existing experience of improving and driving standards of care for our patients, improving quality and safety outcomes and can influence positively patient satisfaction. The applicants will be good role models, have operational experience at senior nursing level, and hold the ability to lead a team through challenging situations, and to nurture, grow and embrace positively our people priorities and CSU culture.

Job description
Job responsibilities
Thejobholder will have overall responsibility for the management ofnursing/associated staff and the management of nursing resources/budgets withinthe CSU or a part of it. The jobholderwill be accountable for ensuring the highest standard of clinical care isprovided within the wards and departments for which they are responsible andensure the principles of clinical governance are implemented at a local jobholder will work inpartnership with the facilities department in ensuring high standards ofhospital cleanliness is maintained, embracing the principles outlined in theMatrons charter.
Thejobholder will be easily identifiable to patients, provide strong leadershipthrough a visible presence and provide support, advice and assistance requiredby patients, their families and carers.The jobholder will also support the implementation of the Patient Adviceand Liaison Service (PALS), being a focal point for advice to patients andcarers and local resolution of complaints.
Currentservices comprise wards and departments across the Urgent Care CSU. Thejobholder has through the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses direct management ofapprox. 100-150 whole time equivalent nursing and support staff. The jobholder is responsible for themanagement of nursing resources and ward and department budgets.
4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OFRESPONSIBILITY
Value for Money:
Be responsible for the management ofhuman and material resources within the designated area and play a key role inensuring the CSU delivers a balanced budget.
Manage the delegation of ward/deptbudgets to Senior Sister/Charge Nurses and Nurse Specialists providing supportand advice as required.
Ensure performance measures areimplemented to monitor/develop financial management at ward/dept level.
Be responsible for the allocation ofstaff to all areas, ensuring adequate staffing cover is provided on a dailybasis. Review nursing establishments toensure skill mix reflects current workload requirements and represents best useof resources.
Oversee the use of bank and agencystaff and monitor expenditure to ensure financial balance is achieved. Assess the impact of extra hours worked bystaff on their performance and the needs of the service.
Review trends on expenditure andactivity accordingly and action to be taken.
Qualityof Care/Clinical Governance:
Work with members of the ClinicalManagement Team (CMT) to deliver high quality, timely health care. Contribute to the implementation of NationalService Frameworks (where applicable) and National Policy.
Work closely with SeniorSisters/Charge Nurses to secure and ensure the highest standard of clinicalcare is provided within available resources.
Work in conjunction with ClinicalDirectors, business managers and other CMT staff to ensure national patientaccess targets are met.
Support bed management processeswithin the CMT.
Ensure processes at Ward/Deptencompass measures to ensure smooth transition of patients through the carepathway, for example, timely admission and discharge processes, nurse initiateddischarge (where appropriate).
Ensure that clinical governanceprocesses at ward and department level encompass measures to ensure the qualityof the fundamental and essential aspects of care within the CMT. Play a leading role in clinical benchmarking,using the Essence of Care toolkit, ensuring examples of good practice areshared.
Ensure nurses work within the Trust Nursing Policy and Practice Guideline framework. Lead developments in practice through policies and guidelines and support others in this process.
Communicate effectively through daily contact with ward/dept staff.
Be responsible for the monitoring and auditing of standards of care. These standards will include areas such as cleanliness, quality of food and nutrition and the prevention and control of hospital acquired infection.
Ensure appropriate environments and infrastructure for patient care is provided, with support from a named Facilities Manager.
Deliver a quality service through setting and monitoring clinical and non-clinical performance standards, working in collaboration with housekeeping staff, catering, laundry, portering and clerical staff.
Working with members of the CMTs, play a leading role in the management of clinical and non-clinical risk in the speciality contributing to the development of a live risk register. Ensure risk assessments are undertaken in all areas in accordance with Trust policy and develop action plans accordingly.
Ensure clinical and non-clinical incidents are reported in accordance with Trust policy and agree actions in response to these.
Maintain a safe working environment, being aware of the requirements to comply with Health and Safety regulations. Ensure equipment is maintained according to manufacturers specifications and necessary repairs are undertaken. Ensure staff are trained and supervised where appropriate in the correct use of equipment.
Address the concerns of patients and service users and respond to their suggestions for local quality improvements. Lead the investigation and management of complaints through local resolution and in accordance with the Trust complaints procedure,liasing with the Patient Relations department where necessary.
Support the implementation of a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), being a focal point for advice to patients and carers and local resolution of complaints.
Ensure patient records are completed in accordance with the NMC guidelines for records and record keeping (2002) and make arrangements to audit this.
Champion the development of nursing practice.
Working with Deputy Chief Nurse(s) and the Nursing Directorate to ensure the implementation & delivery of the Nursing Strategy.
Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery's or Health and Care Professionals Council's Code of Conduct
Education and Training:
Ensure that Senior Sisters/ChargeNurses and Nurse Specialists acquire and maintain an appropriate repertoire ofmanagement and clinical skills to develop their competencies in line withagreed personal development plans.
Ensure nursing staff maintain mandatory training requirements relevant to their speciality in accordance with Trust policy.
Undertake Senior Sister/Charge Nurse/Nurse Specialist staff appraisals and ensure all staff have personal development plans in accordance with Trust policy and support other senior nursing staff in this process.
Promote evidence based practice within wards and departments. Support staff in undertaking research/project work.
Coordinate with the post registration education commissions for the CMT, influence content of programmes delivered through Professional Development.
Work with the universities to ensure appropriate learning.
Ensure implementation of Trust study leave policy.
Leadership:
Provide a focus for the day to dayprofessional leadership of nursing and midwifery and support staff within thewards/depts. Accountable for and supportSenior Sisters/Charge Nurses/Nurse Specialists in providing visible andcredible nursing and midwifery leadership in their individual areas ofresponsibility.
Act as a positive clinical role modelthrough the provision of support and advice to staff. Lead by example throughvisible leadership to motivate and empower others.
Have day to day responsibility,through the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses/Nurse Specialists of the nursing andmidwifery and direct care teams in the wards/depts. Ensure that appropriatearrangements are in place to set objectives, monitor performance, agree andreview development needs, (both personal and professional) and to provideleadership, support and motivation to help immediate subordinates and others tounderstand and achieve the required results.
Ensureeffective working relationships and communication is maintained between allgrades of staff and professional groups within the designated area, workingwithin a multidisciplinary team.
Facilitate the provision of clinicalsupervision to staff and support staff in arranging mentorship whereappropriate.
Assess the impact of the investment innursing staff personal development plans.
Provide nursing leadership to CMTs inpartnership with Nurse Specialists and Nurse Consultants to develop newroles/ways of working.
Work with the Nursing Directorate,keep under review the roles of registered nurses and promote the development ofnurses undertaking the CNO 'Ten key skills' as considered appropriate.
Support the development of the supportworker as appropriate.
Ensureappropriate management of the nursing workforce. Manage performance, sicknessabsence and staff capability in accordance with Trust policy.
Support Senior Sisters/ChargeNurses/Nurse Specialists in the recruitment and selection process. Ensure systemsare in place for induction and preceptorship.
Participate in and where required leadnursing initiatives within the CMT and within the Trust.
