KMPT Medical Education are recruiting a Leadership Fellow -
Trust Grade ST4-ST7 Trainee Doctor
A full-time post (40 Hours) is available, however the role is available part-time 3 days per week depending on the successful candidate's preference. The post is a 12-month fixed term Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from 06/08/2025 to 04/08/2026.
The post holder will be expected to attend various locations in Kent for meetings, teaching sessions and events but the base of the post can be flexible to suit the appointed candidate.
The focus of this Higher Specialty Resident Doctor level fellowship post is to improve the local education and experience of the medical workforce by supporting the Director of Medical Education with Leadership Projects relating to Mental Health Education and Training, particularly for core trainees.
The role also has a key focus on developing the postholder’s own leadership and education capability. This will be achieved through the work-based project(s) and a bespoke development programme including the Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning at BSMS. This will be achieved through 0.6 full-time equivalent from this posting.
1.1. To identify and scope project(s) work to deliver benefits in an agreed area based on investigation and diagnosis of need in collaboration with key stakeholders.
1.2. To provide leadership to the project(s) including: initiating, delivering, coordinating, communicating, engaging stakeholders, monitoring and reporting on progress.
1.3. To provide support and leadership to colleagues involved in the project work.
1.4. To lead, co-ordinate and participate in relevant meetings related to the project(s) and other agreed elements of the role.
2.1. To develop an understanding of and engagement with relevant decision-making and other processes related to the fellowship project, leadership, education, and change in the organisation and local system in order to be able to progress project work, increase its impact and enhance skills in working across traditional boundaries.
2.2. To attend BSMS, regional and national educational and other relevant meetings and liaise with the BSMS Programme Team and the local office of NHS England Workforce, Training and Education Directorate as required.
3.1. To complete the Post Graduate academic studies pathway (PG Cert in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning) as agreed with BSMS.
3.2. To participate in learning events and other educational activities related to the programme.

JOB PURPOSE:

The role includes a clinical component to enable the postholder to maintain and develop their clinical skills.

Leadership is a key part of doctors’ professional work regardless of speciality and setting. It is already a requirement of all doctors as laid out in the General Medical Council’s (GMC) publicationsGood MedicalPractice, Tomorrow’s Doctorsand alsoManagement for Doctors. While the primary focus for doctors is on their professional practice, all doctors work in systems and within organisations. It is a vitally important fact that doctors have a direct and far-reaching impact on patient experience and outcomes. 3. Development and dissemination of learning
3.1. To complete the Post Graduate academic studies pathway (PG Cert in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning) as agreed with BSMS.
3.2. To participate in learning events and other educational activities related to the programme.
3.3. To actively pursue options for sharing knowledge and learning arising from the project work and programme. As a minimum, to present a poster for sharing learning with programme sponsors and stakeholders at the end of the year.
Clinical duties
Within the Medical Education department, the candidate will be part of an enthusiastic and dynamic multi-professional team including Consultants, trainees and other clinicians. There will be exposure to clinical activity to maintain clinical skills (e.g. Older Adults patients and Psychiatric Inpatient wards). Specialist clinics can be accommodated depending on the candidate’s requirements. Contribution to the on-call rota will be considered
Contribution to an out of hours tier 2 on-call rota will be expected for section 12 approved doctors.
(Note: clinical activities should not adversely impact on academic studies attendance and participation in development programme – i.e. release for module attendance and other required events must be enabled)
RESPONSIBILITY:
The post holder will be part of the Medical Education team and will carry out various projects / roles to support the education, training and improved experience of our junior doctors / specific fellowship focus as agreed in Leadership Projects relating to Mental Health and LD & Education and Training.
The role may include:
· leading work to improve educational delivery or experience in an identified area
· participating in LFGs and organising and co-ordinating meetings.
· leading work to improve junior doctor experience and well-being
· leading or participating in work to support differential attainment
· support with delivering education and training for trainees, medical students or multi-professional groups
· developing training with a focus on patient safety including “lessons learned” and debrief for clinical incidents and near misses
· co-ordinating senior and junior leadership projects
· developing leadership programmes
· providing mentorship and assisting trainees with their quality improvement projects
The role also provides the opportunity to gain insight into medical education processes and infrastructure at Trust and KSS Deanery level.
ENVIRONMENT:
• The post requires frequent and high levels of concentration for checking documents and analysing statistics which includes paying close attention to reports and other data with relation to leadership projects.
• Driving licence essential:
The post holder is required to be flexible and to travel where necessary across KMPT sites. The post holder may be required to work cross site when required across Kent.
JOB PLAN
Three days non-clinical (60% full time) for leadership and education fellowship work – leading specified project work and participating in the development programme, including attendance at BSMS for the academic modules, Learning Network attendance and personal study. The days for module attendance vary, but it is asked that Fridays are one of the non-clinical days, so that all Fellows are available on those days for contact.
