Histology Academic Fellow
This is an opportunity to join the Department of Cellular Histopathology at St Mark’s hospital, London Northwest University Hospitals NHS Trust as a Research Fellow in GI Histopathology.
We are looking for a junior doctor with experience in histopathology beyond ST1 level (or equivalent). The successful candidate will be engaged in a GI digital pathology research programme under the supervision of Drs Morgan Moorghen and Olivier Giger. The Department of pathology is currently embarking on implementation of digital pathology and it is envisaged that the appointee will be part of the implementation team. There will also be opportunities to develop deeper expertise in GI histopathology as part of the supervised reporting rota for trainee histopathologists in the department. Histopathology trainees seeking an out of programme research training opportunity (OOPR) are particularly encouraged to apply.
Candidates require full registration with the GMC and should have experience in Histopathology equivalent to ST1/ST2 level at least.
This post is for a fixed term of 12 months with a start date of September 2024.
This is a full-time post is based at the NPH-SMH campus with occasional duties at the St Mark’s Campus at Central Middlesex Hospital.
The appointee will be expected to take part in research and quality improvement projects in GI digital pathology which complement the impending introduction of digital histopathology reporting. In this regard the appointee with be supervised by Drs Morgan Moorghen and Olivier Giger.
The appointee will also share the responsibilities of the GI histopathology service with the specialist registrar traineesinthe department and will be allocated dutiesina 1 in 4 rota. The rota arrangement will be flexible to prioritise research and quality improvement activities in line with the priorities of the Department of Cellular pathology.
The post-holder will be given graded responsibility for reporting in line with his/her level of experience.
The post-holder will be expected to participate in MDTMs, audit, quality assurance, teaching of junior medical and laboratory scientific staff and others including undergraduates when required.
The post-holder will be expected to work alongside professional colleagues and managers in Cellular Pathology, the rest of the Trust and to maintain the efficient running of Cellular Pathology.
The postholder will be provided with a shared office, modern microscope with teaching arm and PC with internet and e-mail access.

The post-holder will be expected to acquire training relevant to digital pathology and the specific research projects being undertaken. Opportunities to take part in GI histopathology training activities in the department will be available along with one-to-one reporting sessions with relevant consultants when appropriate.
All members of clinical staff in the department take part in an annual appraisal. For clinical research fellow/s the line of accountability is via the educational supervisor and/or academic supervisors, GI lead and clinical director.
