Outwood Academy Bydales is an 11-16 school located in the beautiful coastal village of Marske-by-the-Sea, close to the North York Moors National Park and with spectacular views of the coastline. We are extremely proud of our tradition of serving the families of the community of Marske and surrounding areas. This was recognised in our recent ungraded Ofsted Inspection which stated “This is a school at the heart of its community”, and “This is a calm and orderly school.” Following this inspection we remain an Outstanding School, and the report rightly celebrated our many strengths.
It's a fantastic school for those seeking to be part of a dedicated academic community that aims to help students succeed in their studies. The Academy sets high expectations for its students through an ambitious curriculum, this has resulted in positive attitudes being shown by students towards their GCSE examinations. This is a perfect site for anyone who is looking to join an Academy that promotes a culture of good behaviour for both students and staff.
About the Department
The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. To build enthusiasm for English study, the department has developed a thematic curriculum which considers topical issues and an exciting range of texts, both contemporary and canonical. Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers and thoughtful communicators. We are committed to consistently evaluating our curriculum to ensure relevance to our context and provide fresh interest for students and staff alike.
There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This was referenced in our recent inspection report which included the statement that “Reading is a priority for the school”. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. A specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.
As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise. At Bydales our outcomes in English are exceptional: in 2023 nearly 90% of students attained at least a grade 4 and close to 80% attained at least a grade 5, with a significantly positive progress score too. In 2024 over 85% of students attained at least a grade 4 and over 70% attained at least a grade 5 in either Language or Literature, with a significantly positive progress score too.
