University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
Research is a rewarding and patient centred career!
The research conducted at UHS is focused on the health and well-being of our patients and their families, and significantly contributes to the future progress of healthcare for all patients. This exciting opportunity is ideal for someone with a passion for respiratory medicine and clinical research, who thrives in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment.
We can truly make a difference to an individual’s care and experience within UHS, and we strive to ensure that research is considered as a treatment option for all eligible patients. By working closely with clinical teams and integrating research into clinical pathways, the opportunities for both research and our team are expanding.
We currently have a vacancy within the Clinical Research Facility for a Band 7 Senior Research Sister/Charge Nurse in the respiratory team. This is a pivotal role where you will oversee the management of the respiratory research team to ensure optimal delivery of studies in the respiratory portfolio. The post holder will provide professional, operational, and clinical leadership and management of research staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team acting as a role model, providing specialist clinical and research advice with responsibility for clinical service, delivery staff and research governance issues.
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to.
Due to the nature of this role and service, this role is on-site and the hours are as advertised.
Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
You will provide oversight and support to Research Nurses/Midwives, AHPs, Clinical Research Practitioners and Clinical Trial Assistants for new and ongoing, respiratory research studies translating scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes. You will be involved in all aspects of the research process from study feasibility and start-up to delivery and close out of a study. You will utilise your clinical skills and research expertise through set-up and delivery. You will join our current team of Senior Research Sisters/Charge Nurses/AHPs who are committed to driving forward the research strategy here at UHS for the benefit of respiratory patients and their families.

You will need excellent project management skills and you must be able to trouble-shoot and problem-solve to keep challenging studies on track. Excellent communication skills are required to provide guidance and support to the team whilst liaising with the wider team and Investigators across the department. The ability to communicate with staff and colleagues at all levels and disciplines in an engaging manner is essential. Good IT skills will be required.
