Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology

We are a UKAS and IBMS accredited department serving Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with multiple laboratories covering many clinical specialties. We provide a comprehensive range of Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory services and specialty diagnostic testing and reference work for leukaemia, haemostasis, thrombosis and haemoglobinopathies.
We are looking for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist. You will have specialist Haematology and Transfusion experience having completed a specialist portfolio or its predecessor a logbook. We are unable to offer a band 6 position if you do not meet the person specification (eg Specialist Portfolio). You will be required to work a shift pattern which includes earlies, lates, weekends and nights. For the right candidate we may consider offering a rota with predominately night shifts. We may consider a band 5 with Haematology and transfusion experience. The department has an excellent reputation of supporting staff with completion of the specialist portfolio. Within the role you will be given the opportunity for personal and continued professional development. You may be required to work at all Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites, dependent on the needs of the service.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will act without direct supervision as a registered Biomedical Scientist providing the Haematology & Blood Transfusion diagnostic and therapeutic service to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis.
They will undertake diagnostic analysis of biological samples and perform complex/specialist investigations that must be performed accurately to avoid direct adverse effects on the patient. Using a wide range of equipment from simple manual equipment to highly sophisticated analysers and techniques that include specialised diagnostic testing referred from other hospitals.
They will need to exercise judgement and interpretation to validate results and generate laboratory reports in accordance with policies and protocols and perform further tests to aid diagnosis where necessary, alerting clinicians when results are abnormal. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
* IBMS validated Biomedical Sciences Degree or Equivalent
* HCPC Registration
* Completed IBMS Specialist Diploma, or logbook
* Evidence of CPD in accordance with Health Professions Council guidance
Skills
* Evidence of working as part of a team
* Good communication skills including ability to communicate with peers and senior staff and clinical users of service
* Able to work unsupervised, to organise workload, and to organise and train less qualified, or less experienced staff
* Able to prioritise analytical work and plan day -to -day organisation of area of work
Knowledge and Experience
* Evidence of post - registration speciality training, in accordance with IBMS guidelines or equivalent
* Have extensive working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and theoretical knowledge of the various methods employed
* Able to operate and maintain complex automated and semiautomated equipment
* Knowledge of Laboratory IT programmes and good key board skills

Salary: £37,338 to £44,962 a year (pro rata)
