Sowe Valley Primary Care Network is recruiting for an experienced paramedic looking to develop their skills working alongside our established multi-disciplinary team.
Currently, we have 10 experienced paramedics working across our PCN Locality and would like to expand the team further.
This exciting role provides the opportunity to enrol on fully funded independent prescribing and ACP MSc courses with support and mentorship from experienced GPs in our member practices and a dedicated medical director.
Main duties of the job
- Assess, diagnose, and treat patients and or service users who attend with undifferentiated or undiagnosed conditions
- To undertake care home visits in accordance with the relevant protocols.
- To refer patients to an alternative care setting/ treat and discharge as appropriate.
- Advise patients on general health care, promoting self-management where appropriate though signposting patients to PCN services alongside other community or voluntary services.
- Participate in vaccination programmes as appropriate.
About us
Sowe Valley Primary Care Network has been established for six years and covers the East of Coventry with 86,000 patients across ten GP Practices.
We have built a team of ARRS staff including ten paramedics and a range of pharmacists, physiotherapists, social prescribers, care coordinators, pharmacy technicians, nurse associates and GP assistants.
Job responsibilities
A paramedic provides care for the presenting patient from initial history taking and clinical assessment through to the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care. They will demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process, including assessment and diagnostic skills, leading to the delivery of safe care for all patients.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the healthcare team to meet the needs of the patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures.
The paramedic will provide a holistic and clinical service, with support from the GPs as required, implementing agreed management plans and following approved protocols as appropriate.
The paramedic will be expected on a typical day to carry out assessments of patients presenting with acute medical problems in a surgery setting and may include home visits to patients who are housebound or living in a care home
General Responsibilities
* Participate in all treatment and preventative healthcare services in the practice as delegated and agreed by the supervising GP (s).
* Provide direct clinical care to patients using established clinical guidelines.
* Consult patients, take medical histories, perform physical examinations, analyse, diagnose and explain medical problems during surgery consultations and home visits.
* Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment.
* Request and interpret results of laboratory investigations when necessary
* Instruct and educate patients in preventative health care.
* Conduct telephone consultations, where appropriate.
* Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes.
Training and Development
* Ensure continuing education, training and development is undertaken to meet clinical governance guidelines for Continuing Professional Development and a Personal Development Plan.
* Keep up to date with relevant medical research, technology and evidence-based medical practice by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, reading journals etc.
* Attend regular multi-disciplinary meetings organised by the practice in order to discuss and learn from recent significant events relating to clinical practice occurring within the practice.
* Attend regular educational meetings organised by the practice in order to update clinical knowledge, practice policy and guidelines and disseminate other useful information relevant to the provision of adequate healthcare for patients.
* Regularly reflect on own practice (and keep a record of learning encounters) in order to identify learning needs and encourage self-directed lifelong learning and continued professional development.
* Enrol on independent prescriber and/or MSc ACP training programmes
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level in paramedicine or equivalent experience.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council as a paramedic.
* Hold or be working towards an independent prescribing qualification.
* Trained in assessing minor illness / injuries
Experience
* Completed their two-year Consolidation of Learning period when a newly qualified paramedic.
* Completed a further two to three years experience as a band 6 (or equivalent) paramedic.
* Knowledge of IT and clinical systems such as EMIS and Accurx.
* Has previously worked in a primary care setting or a Primary Care Network.

* Ability to work on own initiative.
* Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively with people at all levels by telephone, email and face to face.
