Red Bull Powertrains is a Formula One power unit manufacturing company and the newest addition to the Red Bull Technology Campus in Milton Keynes. Formed in 2021, Red Bull Powertrains is continuously expanding the team of experienced and talented engineers from different backgrounds, all working towards developing a championship winning Power Unit that will comply with 2026 regulations.
We are looking for a Junior Materials Engineer to join the Material and Battery Engineering Group of Red Bull Powertrains. You will support the ERS and ESS areas of the Powertrain working closely with other areas of the business including Design, Quality, Purchasing and Performance to deliver a race and championship winning Power Unit. With the opportunity to be involved in multiple areas of the Power Unit, knowledge of electronic systems and battery cell technology is advantageous as well as knowledge of material processing such as manufacturing methods, heat treatment and surface treatment of materials and components.
This role would suit a Junior Materials Engineer or a Materials Engineer early in their career with a passion to gain new knowledge and skills whilst pushing our technology forwards.
To fulfil this Junior Materials Engineer position, you will need:
1. A Materials Science or Materials Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
2. Knowledge of F1 hybrid power unit materials is advantageous but involvement in high-performance R&D projects and experience of short lead time projects is a pre-requisite.
3. Excellent understanding of the failure mechanisms of different materials.
4. Methodical approach to problem solving.
5. Technical report writing including ability to draw conclusions and make decisions.
6. Experience of heat treatments and surface treatments with the ability to write appropriate control specifications and audit suppliers.
7. Knowledge of conventional material manufacturing methods as well as new technologies such as Additive Manufacturing.
8. Eagerness to learn and push experience beyond current knowledge levels.
9. Practical hands-on approach with ability to self-manage workload and priorities when necessary.
10. Ability to generate innovative materials solutions that deliver benefits to the Power Unit.
11. Willingness to adapt to the challenge of a fast-paced, technically challenging environment.
The ideal Junior Materials Engineer will have:
1. Ability to prepare metallurgical samples for examination.
2. Knowledge of the operation of standard metallurgical equipment.
3. Experience of material property testing and interpretation of the results.
4. Can-do attitude and willingness to learn new skills is essential.
5. Evidenced experience of complex decision making and strategic thinking when faced with imperfect data and challenging timelines.
