Driven by the urgent need for clean shipping, Spaera was formed to deliver a scalable, zero-emission solution for the maritime industry. We believe that net-zero is not only achievable but also the most cost-effective way forward by utilising the latest innovations in maritime and adjacent industries. By harnessing the power of efficient design and wind energy, we aim to revolutionise marine logistics. Our advantage? A fresh perspective. We are a diverse team of experts in fluid dynamics, systems integration, logistics, strategy, and start-ups, united by the mission to reduce humanity's footprint on Earth. We are here to demonstrate the transformative power of rethinking maritime logistics from the ground up.
About the role
In this role, you will be an integral part of our efforts to industrialise Spaera’s high-performance, proprietary wind propulsion technology. You will collaborate across departments to ensure our designs are optimised for peak performance, cost-efficiency, durability, and manufacturability. As part of a small but ambitious start-up, this is a hands-on role where you will face a variety of challenges, offering the opportunity to have a direct and tangible impact on our mission to transform maritime logistics.
You will be responsible for:
* Designing and optimising mechanical systems and structures for our wind propulsion technology.
* Utilising 3D CAD software to develop detailed models and simulations.
* Collaborating with our team to ensure designs meet performance and regulatory standards while balancing factors such as cost and manufacturability.
* Applying broad knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to refine our designs for industrial scalability.
* Supporting the integration of mechanical systems within the larger ship design process, considering factors such as structural integrity and overall ship performance.
You are a perfect fit if you have:
* An undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
* 5+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with strong technical proficiency in 3D CAD systems (such as Catia, NX, Solidworks, or Fusion360).
* A solid understanding of structural performance, manufacturing processes, and materials.
* Familiarity with structural engineering and experience with finite element analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, MAESTRO, NASTRAN/FEMAP).
* The ability to work independently as well as part of a team, thriving in a start-up environment where innovation is key.
* The right to live and work in the UK (essential).
* Postgraduate qualifications in Mechanical or Marine Engineering, or related fields.
* Expertise in mechanical design engineering within the maritime industry.
* Knowledge of commercial ship design standards and regulatory compliance within the maritime industry.
Location
Remote (UK-based), with the possibility of occasional in-person meetings near London, Portsmouth, or Southampton considered a plus.
Benefits
* The opportunity to make a real difference in the fight against climate change.
* A collaborative and supportive work environment with a strong focus on innovation.
* Competitive salary and benefits package.
* The chance to work flexibly and remotely.
