Since 2017 Perinatal mental health services have undergone a time of huge expansion nationally. Locally this has led to the development of a comprehensive perinatal mental health service for South Birmingham during Wave 1 of national funding. Wave 2 of this national funding has led to the creation of comprehensive services covering the Black Country and West Birmingham, North & East Birmingham and Solihull.
All perinatal teams are multi-disciplinary and comprise of specialist practitioners from relevant disciplines including psychology, nursing, OT and nursery nurses. These teams work alongside the well-established existing 10 bedded inpatient Mother and Baby Unit and its Outreach team, which accepts referrals from across the country.
This post provides consultant cover for the MBU Outreach team and for preconception clinic for women with severe mental health problems covering Birmingham and Solihull area. The post is for a fixed term period until 31st March 2026 to cover an employment break.
The role will involve the assessment and treatment of women with a wide range of mental health problems during pregnancy and the post-partum period and ongoing treatment of these women for up to two years post-partum.
The post holder will also be involved in the development of a preconception service for women with severe mental health problems who are considering pregnancy.

A considerable amount of multi-agency work is envisaged with the post-holder working with relevant health teams, other Perinatal mental health services, Home treatment teams, Community mental health teams and key agencies including Child Protection teams, Health Visiting Services and Public Health colleagues from the Local Authorities. There will also be close working with professionals at regional maternity hospitals, primary care – including NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression workers, GPs and Children’s Centres, and collaboration with the voluntary sector. Training and advice for linked agencies will be an important role of the post holder.
