An opportunity to join the Networks and Hosting Team within Technology Service Operations (TSO) which is part of the Technology & Data business unit. Networks and Hosting are responsible for managing and maintaining TfL’s core SQL Server database infrastructure. The infrastructure hosts over 40 Mission Critical and Business Critical services including the London Underground, Overground, Buses and Trams which ultimately keep TfL services to our customers running.
The Team
The team is made up of approximately 5 SQL Server infrastructure DBAs and delivers technical expertise to aid the implementation, maintenance, and support of core technology.
The Role:
As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will carry out day-to-day technical activities, guided by a Senior Engineer. The role also requires working on projects implementing and enhancing databases for TfL applications. Some engagement with stakeholders such as Project Managers, Developers, End Users, Product Managers, and Infrastructure engineers from other IT Infrastructure technologies is required. The team is responsible for the lifecycle support of current product versions and existing legacy ones. There may also be a requirement to support out of hours work and be on-call for TfL’s 24/7 supported services.
Skills:
1. Experienced in planning own activities and input to larger team activities.
2. Delivering to agreed plans.
3. Highly skilled at analysing data to determine trends and patterns to proactively mitigate service affecting issues.
4. Proven ability to convey technical information to non-technical people and the business risks and impacts.
5. Knowledge of aligned platforms with SQL Server such as WINTEL to input into design reviews and approvals.
6. Experience of working with Virtualisation Technologies such as VMWare.
7. DBA experience: monitoring, backup and recovery, high availability, troubleshooting, capacity planning, security, upgrades (SQL versions/patches/hotfixes).
8. Project work: installation and configuration, database upgrades/migrations/copies.
9. TSQL scripting, PowerShell, SSIS – SQL Server Integration Services, SSRS – SQL Server Reporting Services.
10. Performance Tuning: Performance monitor, SQL Server Profiler, DMVs, Resource Governor.
11. Availability Groups, Clustering, Log Shipping, Replication, Encryption.
12. Extensive experience of supporting SQL Server Databases in complex, multi-site environments.
13. ITIL: experience working with incidents, service requests, changes, problems.
14. Experience and availability for 24/7 on-call rota and Out of Hours planned work.
15. Monitoring tools: SCOM, Azure Monitor, Dynatrace.
16. Backups tools: Avamar.
17. Experience of key applications related to SQL Server: Remedy, SCOM, SharePoint, and Citrix.
18. SSAS - SQL Server Analysis Services, ideally experience of PowerBI.
19. Relevant SQL Server certifications aligned to supporting TfL essential SQL Server technologies listed above.
