National Grid is hiring a Head of Risk and Controls to join the NGET Business. This position can be located in NG House, Warwick and we offer hybrid working.
The Opportunity
The Head of Risk and Controls reports to the General Counsel for NGET and is accountable for embedding effective risk management, and directing and advising on the application of National Grid’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework within the National Grid Electricity Transmission business.
As NGET enters a period of heightened investment and activity on the electricity transmission network, it is critical that tactical and enduring risks are understood and assessed. The NGET risk and controls team needs to be a sophisticated partner to the business in assessing and shaping NGET’s risk profile and ensuring effective management and mitigation of our biggest risks.
Leading, managing and motivating your team, you will develop a culture of high performance and efficient delivery. You will use your excellent strategic thinking and thought leadership to identify and communicate the strategic implications of your work to a diverse set of stakeholders at all levels across the business. Through impactful engagement and education you will ensure and enable true accountability for risk management through all layers of the organisation.
You will be responsible for understanding the risks and needs of the NGET business and weighing that up with the obligations and broader risk framework of the National Grid group. You will also develop effective assurance strategies, assurance mapping, plans and objectives for the BU, including ownership and execution of second line testing and collaboration with peer networks across National Grid for continuous improvement and best practice implementation. You will be responsible for ensuring NGET controls teams support Group assurance objectives in line with scope and timelines set by Group Assurance.
You will be expected to effectively drive change and be a thought leader to ensure our risk and assurance processes are appropriate for our changing needs.
What You'll Do
* Support and shape risk management for the NGET Executive team.
* Provide oversight and advice to the first line on tactical and principal risks, and the application of ERM frameworks, adherence to standards and execution of roles and responsibilities for risk management including identifying and planning for emerging risks.
* Develop and maintain stakeholder engagement with BU leaders and provide support, guidance and challenge in their risk management, risk response, controls design, and assurance activities.
* Develop and execute education and training programmes to upskill the BU second line risks and controls team, and the BU’s first line on designing and managing risks and controls, including emphasis on alignment with National Grid's ERM framework and consistent, best practice use of the GRC Archer system.
* Support the General Counsel, deputising, when necessary, on all matters related to risks and controls and delivering the risk, controls and assurance strategies.
* Effectively lead and manage your team to execute BU risk and control activities including supporting risk management deep dives, periodic risk assessments, control framework advice, assurance mapping, controls testing and reporting.
* Coach and develop your team, reviewing and challenging their work ensuring a high performing culture and best practice is applied in risk and controls assurance.
* Liaise effectively with key strategic partners including across the SI Business Unit, CRO, Group Functions’ second line teams, NGET Compliance Managers (CECO), Safety Advisory teams and Corporate Audit as needed.
* Advise on optimal ways of working with the Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) tooling (the Archer system).
About You
* Experience in professional risk management field, audit/assurance, or related professional field, including experience with the 3 Lines Model and leading Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) projects and teams with Executive reporting responsibilities.
* Professional qualification in risk management, finance or audit from a recognised Institute (e.g., Enterprise Risk Management Certified Professional (ERMCP), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Risk Management professional (CRMP), Chartered Accountant (ACA, ACCA, ICAS).
* Utilities, infrastructure or Energy business knowledge and awareness of energy regulations and policy.
* Ability to effectively create, maintain and leverage stakeholder relationships and create sustainable partnerships by being a “go-to” expert in risks and controls and applying this to strategic goals, sharing and leading on best practice and knowledge.
* Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with, collaborate with and present to BU Executives and senior management and maintain mutual agreement.
* Proven team leader with ability to motivate, guide and coach other team members.
What You'll Get
A competitive salary between £95,000 – £110,000 – dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 20% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. Location: The role will be based in National Grid’s Warwick office. We envisage you will spend an average of 2 days a week at your local office and travel to other offices (e.g. Strand in London) may be required from time to time.
