We are seeking applications from dedicated registered nurses with a background or interest in radiology to join our motivated, friendly and supportive team. We can offer you the opportunity of working within all different clinical areas in the department, including the Interventional and Neuro radiology suites, CT scan, Ultrasound and Recovery.
Our education team provides structured support to all staff and our development programmes are well established, including courses affiliated to LSBU and KCL. It would be an advantage to have previous radiology, theatre scrub or recovery experience, but is not essential. The role includes scrub and circulating procedures in the interventional room and support of other areas in the department including the recovery area. As part of your ongoing development there would be the opportunity to rotate to other radiology departments such as Neuroradiology and/or Nuclear Medicine.
The Interventional Radiology department runs a day time service from Monday to Friday with varying shift patterns.
With training, the post holder will also be expected to provide cover for our 24 hour on call service, including weekends and bank holidays. With further training the role would lead to involvement in the administration of intravenous conscious sedation, requiring advanced monitoring of patients during procedures.
You would also be involved in the care and management of patients having ultrasound and CT guided procedures, for both inpatient and day cases, which may also involve working with the anaesthetic team. As part of your ongoing development you will also be trained to be competent in working in Neuroadiology.

9. To take responsibility for managing and coordinating the interventional suite as required.
10. To acknowledge personal limitations in patient care and seek advice from senior staff members where appropriate.
11. To rotate to other departments within the specialty as required (Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine), or as identified as a personal development need in the appraisal process.
12. After appropriate training, conduct patient ward rounds to prepare for next day’s list in order to prevent on the day and last minute cancellations.
13. To effectively manage a pre-assessment clinic when allocated to do so, ensuring that patient is fit for procedure, identifying potential issues that may affect the safe delivery of care, and prompt escalation as appropriate.
14. To organise and perform nurse led pre–assessment clinics utilising the EPIC system to order and obtain results. Completing the radiology report documentation and on informing the referrers of the suitability of the patient for day care and/or arranging admission.
15. To ensure the equipment competencies for the Recovery/Day Cases and Angiography Interventional Suites are completed.
16. Have effective communication and time management skills to avoid delay in getting patients ready for procedures.
17. To assist with the administration of intravenous injections of radiopharmaceuticals and other agents for diagnosis and support in the management of stock levels as required.
18. Participating in the on-call service, and be available to support the service as rostered.
Working effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) through:
1. Liaising effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the relevant information regarding the patient’s needs/condition are communicated to them, and that any instructions from them regarding the patient’s care/condition are acted upon.
2. Exercising leadership and taking the initiative where appropriate.
3. Providing support and advice to ward/unit staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.
4. Liaising with discharge coordinator / bed manager/ IR coordinator to ensure effective admission/discharge of patients.
5. Keeping the ward/unit sister / charge nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.
6. To participate in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and student nurses as required.
7. Participate in Trust and Divisional initiatives to develop practice and support change.
8. To anticipate day to day staffing problems and take appropriate action in conjunction with the team leader, sister/charge nurse, matron and head of nursing, to ensure good standards of care for the patient are maintained at all times.
9. To act as a liaison within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure optimum, timely patient care.

11. To take responsibility for own professional development and to agreed plans with the sister/charge nurse and PDN in order to complete the required and indentified Radiology Education Pathway.
12. Participating in Trust and Divisional initiatives to develop nursing practice and support change.
13. To attend and contribute to departmental meetings as required.
14. Have a commitment to improve patient care by participating in audit and research projects within the department.
15. To be involved with audits and key performance indicators, including own performance appraisals.
16. To report adverse incidents which occur in the department as per policy and to assist in the investigation of such incidences.
17. To accurately record stock movements on the radiology inventory system.
