Job Summary
The post holder will practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate person-centred evidence-based nursing that respects and maintains dignity and human rights. They will be responsible for assessment of care needs of patients and planning programmes of care, implementation, and evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for overseeing the ward/department and supervising junior members of staff. The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion, and recognizes and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees, agencies, service users, and their families. The post holder will contribute to the practice development within their clinical care setting and work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines, and will be responsible for completing any work-based training associated with the role.
The department provides 24-hour care through a variety of shift patterns. The individual will work closely with the team to plan, assess, and implement care for each patient, carry out a full set of observations, identify PEWS score, and escalate to senior nurse and ED doctors.
Main Duties of the Job
* The ability to recognize a critically unwell child.
* Communicate clearly, effectively, and appropriately with the multidisciplinary team, patients and their family, visitors, and carers.
* Achieve and maintain proficiency in a range of clinical skills through practice.
* Following appropriate training and supervised practice, undertake identified competency-based practices which are required for the department, after such tasks have been delegated to them by the senior nursing team.
* Identify learning and development needs and produce personal development plans in conjunction with your line manager/supervisor.
* Achieve and maintain competence in mandatory and statutory training associated with the role.
* Complete documentation of care in line with the Trust Standards for Documentation.
* Act in such a way as to promote a positive image of UHB Foundation Trust at all times.
* Care for and safeguard the public, practice in a safe, compassionate, and patient-centred manner.
* Support members of the team and provide teaching and education where possible.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Children's/Paediatric Nurse on the NMC register (Essential)
* Health care management/leadership qualification (Desirable)
Experience
* Substantial post-registration experience working in a complex healthcare setting/Acute NHS care setting supervising/mentoring junior staff (Essential)
* Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and/or managerial training and CPD (Essential)
* Demonstrate understanding/experience/willingness to be a practice-based supervisor/assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment (Essential)
* Professional portfolio demonstrating continuing professional development and ability to maintain professional registration (Essential)
* Relevant and recent clinical experience within the specialty/acute care setting, including supervision/education of junior staff (Essential)
* Experience of mentoring undergraduate students (Essential)
* Ability to lead/coordinate a shift/area of department (Essential)
