Plastic Surgery is a busy department with 8 Consultants with plans to expand further to deliver a truly 7-day consultant led service.
The department manages trauma from a large catchment, including patients from regional hospitals such as Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge and the Royal Berkshire Hospital, in Reading.
The elective workload includes skin cancer surgery, hand & wrist surgery, breast reconstruction (including Breast microsurgery), abdomino-perineal reconstruction and some aspects of congenital plastic surgery (e.g. polydactyly, syndactyly, pinnaplasty, skin lesions & hypospadias). Members of the Plastic surgery team are involved in the following weekly/monthly MDTs: Skin cancer, Hand Surgery, Breast reconstruction, Diabetic foot reconstruction and Abdominal wall reconstruction. A multidisciplinary team for hand surgery meets monthly, with input from radiologists and hand therapists. A multidisciplinary team meets weekly for local and specialist skin cancers on both sites, Frimley North and Frimley South with input from dermatology, oncology, head and neck, radiology, pathology, and ENT. Some of these MDTs are based at Wexham and others are cross site across the Frimley Trust and many are now conducted via TEAMS. Plastic Surgery also supports the general surgery team at Reading in their abdominal wall reconstruction work.
The post holder is expected to deliver elective skin cancer surgery, including clinics, operating lists and attending the MDTs along with the three other skin cancer surgeons, dermatologists, oncologists and with clinical nurse specialists. There is also the opportunity to get involved in the development of the one stop service in skin cancer, seeing and operating on 2 week wait patients at the same visit. The elective work will include a general plastic surgery caseload.
The post holder will also help deliver Plastic Urgent Care (PUC) clinic which sees open injuries, and a trauma list. The post holder will join the on-call rota (1:8) and provide emergency cover and ward rounds.
The ability to work flexibly, cohesively and in collaboration with the existing consultants is a necessary requirement to the post.
