Job summary The Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery (OMFS) department at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust have been supporting the delivery of urgent suspected skin cancer diagnostics and treatments since July 2022. Typically, 35% of the organisations skin cancer referrals are triaged for a clinical review with the OMFS team, triggering a clinic appointment with a view to diagnostics biopsy or excision of any lesion that patients present with skin cancer. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 registered nurse, to join the OMFS department as a skin cancer nurse. Supporting in the one stop clinics. The role is fixed term contract for a full-time band 5 at 37.5 hrs a week Monday to Friday for a 12-month period. The post holder will primarily be working in the Surgical Hub at Dewsbury and District Hospital but may also be asked to work in the OMFS department on gate 25 at Pinderfields. The post holder will support the Consultants and Staff grade in a one stop skincancer Clinic. Transitioning to a one stop model would drastically reduce the number of required hospital attendances for patients referred into the service, with patients having the opportunity to be reviewed and have treatment on the same day. This can lead to improvements in patients experience as they will be provided with a gold-standard service by having same day treatment. Training will be provided, this may take place in the OMFS department on gate 25 at Pinderfields Hospital. Working in a one stop clinic environment the expectations of the skin cancer nurse would be: Preparation of Theatre and Surgical equipment for minor operations carried out under local anaesthetic. Following aseptic non touch techniques in accordance with the trust guidelines. Provide pre, peri and post-operative care whilst undergoing surgical procedures in a theatre setting. Ensuring that patients are fit for discharge after treatment. Assisting medical/surgical team and providing support as a theatre/scrub nurse who requires a high level of concentration and standing in restricted position for periods of time. Provide skilled nursing support to the medical and surgical team in provision of post-op care to patients receiving facial skin and reconstruction surgery. Ensure correct handling, labelling and dispatch of laboratory/pathology specimens. Provide nursing support to junior members of the team when facilitating their own minor ops lists.
